Nanny LaHood,<span> <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.autonews.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20101008\/OEM06\/101009881\/1182\"><span style=\"color: black;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span> <\/span>the<span> <\/span><em>Automotive News<\/em>, \u201cbelieves motorists are distracted by any use of<span> <\/span><span><span id=\"IL_AD3\" style=\"background-origin: initial !important; background-clip: initial !important; cursor: pointer !important; background-repeat: repeat !important; background-position-x: 0%; background-position-y: 50%; background-attachment: scroll; float: none;\">mobile phones<\/span><\/span><span> <\/span>while driving, including hands-free calls.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; color: black;\">Not content to enforce existing distracted-driver laws, LaHood has been building a case for a non-permissive standard where drivers must be mute, two-hands-on-the-steering-wheel autobots.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; color: black;\"> \u201cI don\u2019t want people talking on phones, having them up to their ear or<span> <\/span><span><span id=\"IL_AD2\" style=\"background-origin: initial !important; background-clip: initial !important; cursor: pointer !important; background-repeat: repeat !important; background-position-x: 0%; background-position-y: 50%; background-attachment: scroll; float: none;\">texting<\/span><\/span><span> <\/span>while they\u2019re driving,\u201d LaHood said this week calling for research on hands-free systems. Hands-free phone conversations are a \u201ccognitive distraction,\u201d he says. And eat your broccoli!<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; color: black;\">The potential restrictions have meant the auto industry has had to arm itself with more lobbyists to make their case for in-car communications systems. Ford\u2019s SYNC and GM\u2019s OnStar system, with about 5.7 million subscribers, are testing applications that would let users make audio updates to their Facebook pages and have messages from the social-media site read to them while driving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; color: black;\">\u201cI\u2019m absolutely opposed to all of that,\u201d said King LaHood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt; color: black;\">What\u2019s next? A ban on small children in cars? Tethers to force both hands on the wheel?
