President Mark Reuss has seen the King\u2019s moods both high and low.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Licensed to test on the world\u2019s greatest race tracks, the engineer-cum-product chief has been intimately involved in the development of multiple generations of the King of Corvettes, the ZR1 \u2014 the mightiest sportscar GM has ever made. On the 3.4-mile Circuit of the Americas Formula One track here, Reuss put the eighth-generation Chevy C8 supercar\u2019s improved grip to the test \u2014 a direct consequence of its mid-engine layout, a first for Corvette and a significant evolution from the seventh-generation car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI can tell you firsthand the C7 was a little light in the rear end. Without the weight limitations of the front-engine, seventh-generation car, Chevy engineers wrapped the $174,995 C8\u2019s engine with the biggest twin turbochargers in the industry,\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/2025\/05\/30\/payne-flat-out-on-circuit-of-the-americas-in-the-beastly-corvette-zr1\/83927754007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/2025\/05\/30\/payne-flat-out-on-circuit-of-the-americas-in-the-beastly-corvette-zr1\/83927754007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\">producing an astonishing 1,064 horsepower<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 over 300 more than C7.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">With such ballistic power on tap, Reuss piloted the King to 233 mph \u2014 a record for a sub-$1 million production car \u2014\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/general-motors\/2024\/10\/16\/gms-reuss-pilots-corvette-zr1-to-233-mph-top-speed-record\/75694318007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/general-motors\/2024\/10\/16\/gms-reuss-pilots-corvette-zr1-to-233-mph-top-speed-record\/75694318007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|\u2691u\">last fall on the high ovals<\/a>\u00a0of the 7.6-mile Papenberg test track in Germany.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThis is something we targeted from day one with the C8 architecture,\u201d Reuss said in an interview in COTA\u2019s paddock while a squadron of ZR1s thundered around the track. \u201cThe day (we) pulled over 1,000 horsepower . . . was a big day for the whole company. He holds a so-called Level 6 driving license (an internal GM designation that connotes a high-level of race track skill) that allows him to test, for example, Corvettes on tracks like 20-turn COTA \u2014 or the 12.9-mile, 73-turn Nu\u0308rburgring in Germany, considered the most daunting circuit in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Ford Motor Co. CEO Jim Farley is an active race driver who recently competed in IMSA\u2019s Michelin Pilot Challenge\u00a0with a Mustang GT4. Toyota Motor Corp. Chairman Akio Toyoda has competed at the 24 Hours of the Nu\u0308rburgring endurance race, and former Stellantis NV executives \u2014 ex-CEO Carlos Tavares and ex-Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato \u2014 shared a car at the 24 Hours of Nu\u0308rburgring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIt&#8217;s an honor, and I take that certification and use very seriously,\u201d Reuss said. \u201cI love to do it, but it&#8217;s not for me personally. It&#8217;s for being part of the development team and giving direction to our engineers. Henry Payne, The Detroit News<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Those engineers include four Level 6 drivers \u2014 lead performance engineer Bill Wise, lead vehicle dynamics engineer Brain Wallace, lead development engineer Chris Barber and global vehicle performance manager Aaron Link \u2014 who, along with Reuss, hosted media at COTA for a first test drive of King Corvette. Barber\u2019s Road Atlanta time, for example, was just 0.7 seconds off GT3.R race laps at last fall&#8217;s Petit Le Mans race. Also notable: Wallace\u2019s 188 mph top speed on Road America\u2019s front straight eclipsed that of IndyCar\u2019s 185 mph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cTo really show the product that we have, this is the place to do it \u2014 COTA or the Nu\u0308rburgring,\u201d said Ken Morris, a GM engineer and senior vice president of product Programs, Product Safety and Motorsports. \u201cA place that has a lot of different conditions that you\u2019re going to exercise the car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Morris credits the C8\u2019s mid-engine layout for better weight distribution, which enables better front corner turn-in and better rear traction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cPutting turbochargers on was a big reason for doing the mid-engine car,\u201d said Reuss, who also lauded the magnetic shock-equipped supercar\u2019s dexterity as a daily driver on Michigan roads. \u201cI drive one every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2025\/06\/03\/PDTN\/84012983007-detroit-gp-2023-reusspacecar.jpg?width=660&amp;height=495&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Reuss redeemed. Henry Payne, The Detroit News<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The Circuit of the Americas test was a first for the GM president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI&#8217;ve never been here, but I watch it on TV \u2014 whatever series it is at this track,\u201d Reuss said. \u201cThe elevation piece of this is way different in person than you see on the track on TV. That&#8217;s been pretty spectacular.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe&#8217;re getting right around 1,200 pounds (of downforce) off the rear wing,\u201d he continued, noting how COTA\u2019s fast corners complement the ZR1\u2019s aerodynamics. \u201cHow hard you can accelerate out of a corner (and get) top speed on a straightaway is one thing. But where you really make hay . . . is in these corners, and that wing helps you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Circuit of the Americas also holds special meaning as GM gears up for entry into Formula One racing with its Cadillac brand in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI&#8217;m really excited when we bring Formula One and Cadillac (here) next year,\u201d Reuss said. \u201cTo be in America at this track is a huge deal. It&#8217;ll be sort of our home track.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Maybe Reuss will take the F1 car for a few laps around COTA as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>Henry Payne is auto critic for The Detroit News.
