The family of Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands sold 1.7 million vehicles for a combined 11% market share. With three U.S. manufacturing plants and a starring role in the New York and Los Angeles auto shows, the Asian brands have a decidedly American accent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In the Big Apple this week, they made major moves for an even bigger bite of the U.S. market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Hyundai, Kia and Genesis dominated media week at the New York International Auto Show, introducing three all-new production vehicles while Genesis unveiled an off-road concept and stunning prototype race car to take on the world\u2019s premier endurance brands, including Porsche, Ford, Cadillac, Toyota and BMW, in North America\u2019s red-hot IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Series.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2025\/04\/16\/PDTN\/83127894007-nyc-show-25-hyundai-motor-group-munoz.jpg?width=990&amp;height=558&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" width=\"562\" height=\"317\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_mo_cap gnt_em_mo_cc__swd\"><em>Hyundai CEO Jose Mun\u0303oz introduces the Hyundai brand at the 2025 New York Auto Show before a packed house of media.<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_mo_crd gnt_em_mo_cc__swd\"><em>Henry Payne, The Detroit News<\/em><\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">With massive, billion-dollar investments in right-to-work states Georgia and Alabama, HMG could be poised to benefit from U.S. tariffs in the same way that Japanese rivals Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. became woven into America\u2019s manufacturing fabric after the Reagan era\u2019s import quotas 40 years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cAuto shows have always been very important. In just one generation, the SUV and its Kia Telluride sibling, which was also introduced in 2020, have become serious players in the three-row family ute segment long dominated by the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot and Chevy Traverse. They both sold in six figures last year for a combined total of over 215,000 units \u2014 more than segment pioneer Explorer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Auto analyst Rebecca Lindland, managing director of Allison Worldwide, said the posh Korean twins have been key to transforming their brands\u2019 dollar store image: \u201cThe perception of Hyundai and Kia was that they were cheap. Palisade and Telluride have done a lot to overcome that stigma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWelcome to New York!\u201d exclaimed Hyundai CEO Joe Mun\u0303oz to a packed media gallery on the brand\u2019s Javits Convention Center stage. \u201cWe are investing more because we have resolved to be a market leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Palisade is made at the automaker&#8217;s assembly complex in Alabama, the flagship of U.S. operations that employ 57,00 people across the United States. Jeff Landry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Hyundai\u2019s positioning echoes that of Honda and Toyota, which began U.S. production in, respectively, Ohio and Kentucky the 1980s as the Reagan administration and a Democratic Congress imposed protectionist measures. You don\u2019t have union rules constraining you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">COO Marquez said tariffs are a fact of international trade: \u201cIt is a reality (for which) we feel we are very well prepared,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are committed to continue investing in the U.S. Last year, we sold 836,000 units and 40% of those were produced in the U.S. The U.S. is a very important market and we want to be a very important part of it in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Hyundai Motor Group has also positioned itself for government electric vehicle mandates. The $23k K4 sedan \u2014 its upscale looks echoing a Cadillac CT5 \u2014 has been wildly popular since its introduction this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Made in South Korea (along with the EV4), the K4s could face affordability challenges because of tariffs, but so far this year the sedan model has outsold everything in the Korean brand\u2019s lineup \u2014 even its popular Sportage SUV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Hyundai, too, produces parallel ICE and EV lines (the Palisade\u2019s EV counterpart is the three-row Ioniq 9, for example).<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cEVs are very important and we believe they are where the market is going to grow in the long term,\u201d said Marquez. \u201cThe investment in our (EV\/hybrid) factory is one of the biggest investments in the Georgia state. We produce two models there at the moment \u2014 Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 9.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Perhaps the biggest sign of HMG\u2019s arrival in the big leagues was the unveiling here of its Genesis GTP race car.
