The Hollywood duo compliment over 800 of world\u2019s best chopped, channeled, dumped \u2018n\u2019 decked hot rods and custom cars \u2014 including competitors for hot rodding\u2019s biggest bauble, the Ridler Award.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Autorama attracts custom builders from all over the world \u2014 including an Austrian entry this year \u2014 as well as celebrities like former \u201cStreet Outlaw\u201d TV hosts Farmtruck and AZN and Farmtruck, \u201cCounting Cars\u201d TV hosts Danny Koker and Kevin Mack, and WWE Hall of Famers Team 3D.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2025\/02\/27\/PDTN\/80738904007-0227-kk-autorama-2025-16.jpg?width=990&amp;height=672&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" width=\"498\" height=\"338\" \/><\/figure>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_img_ccw gnt_em_img_ccw__cap gnt_em_img_ccw__crd\" data-c-caption=\"Barbie's pink Cadillac convertible will be among the classic cars on display at this weekend's Detroit Autorama.\" data-c-credit=\"Autorama\">\n<div class=\"gnt_em_mo_cap gnt_em_mo_cc__swd\"><em>A 1970 Barbie-themed Cadillac Deville from the Walt Disney World Resort is displayed in the 2025 Autorama car show on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025 at Huntington Place in Detroit.<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_mo_crd gnt_em_mo_cc__swd\"><em>Katy Kildee, The Detroit News<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In addition to the stars, Autorama spices the recipe with local flavor including\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/detroitnews.sports.gracenote.com\/football\/nfl\/team\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-autotag=\"a9d615a6-a025-4346-9c29-28956ed45852\" data-t-l=\":b|z|k|${u}\">Detroit Lions<\/a>\u00a0linebacker Alex Anzalone, who will sign autographs, a Dexter family\u2019s 1941 Buick Special that survived Parel Harbor, an 11-year-old Macomb drag racer, a 17-year-old Madison Heights customer-builder\u2019s AMC Gremlin, and more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cBeing that this is the Motor City, we have the most knowledgeable, passionate and dedicated hot rod\/custom car fans in the world. That&#8217;s why we look forward to their reaction to this year&#8217;s Autorama,\u201d said producer Peter Toundas, who is also president and owner of Championship Auto Shows Inc. \u201cAll of the attractions at this year\u2019s Autorama will astound showgoers. Bu, at the heart of Autorama are the dazzling hot rods and customs competing for top awards including The Ridler.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Austrian custom builder Knud Tiroch brought his dazzling, Sterling Silver, 1951 Mercury 951 all the way from Vienna for Autorama to compete in the Match Race and Exhibition Class. Tiroch said the United States is the epicenter of global hot rod culture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cHot rod and custom culture in Europe is also American Fords, Corvettes, Chevys,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have them all. Occasionally you\u2019ll see a modified VW Beetle. We have done shows in Oslo, Norway; Elmia Convention Center in Sweden, and Essen, Germany. And now I\u2019m doing shows in the United States while my son runs the shop back home.\u201dA veteran of the Red Bull Formula One racing team, Tiroch has brought racing know-how to his Mercury creation, which is slammed to the ground on a performance chassis and fortified by a full roll cage. Entries like the \u201cGray Madder\u201d \u2014 \u00a0a custom-built 1955 Chevy Nomad from Pekin, Illinois, that has been in the making for 10 years. Presented by Meguiar&#8217;s, the most coveted award in hot rodding is presented to the best new custom car. The world\u2019s finest custom car builders will unveil their cars here \u2014 many of them the result of of years (and millions of dollars) in prep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Some 30 cars qualify and will then be winnowed by judges to the BASF Great 8. The 30th Anniversary of The Cavalcade of Cars is also on hand \u2014 a collection of the United States\u2019 finest customs cars selected by legendary builder Chuck Miller.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Also a legend here is Al Bergler, 88, the first Ridler Award winner in 1964 with an Austin coupe dragster. These days, Bergler is passing on his know-how to 11-year old drag racer Aiden Thomas of Macomb who has brought his Junior Dragster class slingshot racer to Autorama. Aiden\u2019s grandfather, Kelly Wojzik, 64, crews for his grandson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Other Michigan entries of note include:<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u27a4Amy and John Michalek of Dexter will showcase their 1941 Buick Special, which survived the bombing of Pearl Harbor after its owner \u2014 Amy\u2019s great uncle \u2014 did not. Murray also auctions auto memorabilia to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Back in the celebrity aisle, Farmtruck and AZN&#8217;s latest creation is called (appropriately) The Funny Farm. This Frankenstein\u2019s monster features opposing, 1970 C10 truck cabs welded together, then powered by twin Cadillac 500-cubic inch engines. Operation requires two drivers \u2014 facing in opposite directions \u2014 controlling independent steering, braking and drive systems<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The result? All-wheel-drive, 360-degree burnouts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Barbie\u2019s 1970 pink Cadillac \u2014 all the way from Orlando\u2019s Epcot Center, where it\u2019s used as a parade car \u2014 is on the main floor with all these toys, but the eight-foot-tall Megamorph Transformer will be found in the high-ceiling Atrium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Want more eye candy? Autorama Extreme covers Huntington Place\u2019s 100,000-square-foot lower level featuring over 200 traditional rods, customs and bobber bikes inspired by the 1950s. There can be found one of Autorama\u2019s youngest entrants, Nolan McCann, 17, of Madison Heights, who will has brought his custom 1972 AMC Gremlin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The first Detroit Autorama took place in 1953 at the University of Detroit Field House as a fundraiser for Michigan Hot Rod Association&#8217;s efforts to build the legendary Motor City Dragway. The circus then moved between the Michigan State Fairgrounds and the Detroit Artillery Armory before coming to rest at Detroit\u2019s convention center in 1961.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>Henry Payne is auto critic for The Detroit News.
