A rainstorm hit at about 3 p.m. during the 2024 Dream Cruise but didn&#8217;t deter the diehards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>Son of a Milk Man<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>Pontiac<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 The milk truck is back. A staple of American neighborhoods in post-World War II America, milk trucks delivered the precious liquid to homes everywhere. Dave Kerby grew up as the son of a milk man when his father returned to Detroit a decorated war hero and drove a truck for Twin Pines Dairy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Years later, Dave made a barn find in California &#8211; purchasing and restoring a 1965 milk truck made by the Detroit Industrial Vehicles Company (Divco for short) \u2013 and restoring it in Twin Pines livery.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2024\/08\/18\/PDTN\/74848129007-cruise-saturday-kerbymilktruck.jpg?width=660&amp;height=372&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Dave Kerby and 1965 Twin Pines Dairy milk truck.\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"gnt_em_img_ccw gnt_em_img_ccw__cap gnt_em_img_ccw__crd\" data-c-caption=\"Dave Kerby and 1965 Twin Pines Dairy milk truck.\" data-c-credit=\"Henry Payne, The Detroit News\">\n<p><em>Dave Kerby and 1965 Twin Pines Dairy milk truck. Henry Payne, The Detroit News<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIt\u2019s the last of a dying breed,\u201d said Kerby at M1 Concourse in Pontiac where it was mobbed by fans. \u201cI drove it my dad\u2019s house on his 100th birthday and surprised him.\u201dLocated in Detroit, Divco made trucks for dairies, breadmakers and other delivery companies from 1926 to 1986. Few remain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cTwin Pines had a lot of milk trucks in Detroit \u2013 about 1,200 running around \u2013 because they had a Saturday TV show with Milky the Clown that made them super popular,\u201d said Kerby. \u201cI\u2019ve been cruising Woodward this week and people come up and tell their milk man stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The advent of the supermarket put an end to milk deliveries beginning in the 1970s. \u201c Kroger and WalMart came along and it was cheaper to pick it up at the grocery. The hydraulically-operated cars are non-stop entertainment with the ability to move side-to-side, three-wheel, and hop \u2013 sometimes over six feet into the air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe have between 16 and 18 cars this year,\u201d said Sanchez, sporting a colorful purple mane at M1 Concourse. \u201cThey get out there and hitting switches and moving around. It\u2019s very complicated. Henry Payne, The Detroit News<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">To withstand the vehicles\u2019 dance moves and added hardware, lowriders frames are reinforced, increasing a sedan\u2019s weight by as much as 40%. Kalea Hall, The Detroit News<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI love having all of the looks,\u201d Westergaard said. \u201cEveryone has a memory associated with this car or something similar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">This was the first time the recently engaged couple brought the classic station wagon out to cruise after buying it three weeks ago.
