{"id":32464,"date":"2024-03-27T09:32:02","date_gmt":"2024-03-27T13:32:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/henrypayne.com\/?p=32464"},"modified":"2024-03-27T09:32:02","modified_gmt":"2024-03-27T13:32:02","slug":"payne-at-nyc-auto-show-how-big-apple-is-adapting-to-a-new-show-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/henrypayne.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/payne-at-nyc-auto-show-how-big-apple-is-adapting-to-a-new-show-era","title":{"rendered":"Payne at NYC Auto Show: How Big Apple is adapting to a new show era"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>New York<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 Whipsawed by the pandemic and a changing media landscape, it\u2019s been a difficult few years for auto shows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">North America\u2019s major shows \u2014 Detroit, Chicago, Los Angles, and New York \u2014 have all seen defections from European brands, floors space shrink as automakers moved glitzy media introductions to other venues, and ticket sales slump as customers were spooked by COVID and declining auto offerings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But as the show circus rolls into its original venue this week, New York Auto Show President Mark Scheinberg sees signs of stability.<\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_gl_i_nt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2024\/03\/25\/PDTN\/73097654007-nyc-show-24-setupfordnissan.jpg?width=990&amp;height=567&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" width=\"562\" height=\"322\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_gl_vg\" data-c-tc=\"7\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_t\" data-c-et=\"Gallery: 2024 New York Auto Show\">\n<div class=\"gnt_em_mo_cap gnt_em_mo_cc__swd\"><em>Nissan sets up for the 2024 New York Auto Show, <\/em><em>New York Auto Show, New York Auto Show<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cAuto retailers see the value of auto shows,\u201d he said of the show that will open to media at the Javits Convention Center March 27-28, and to the public March 28-April 7. \u201cThey understand they need to be there. It is the best place where consumers can come and get information about multiple brands for their purchase. That\u2019s what auto shows have always been about at their core. There is nothing like getting into a car and feeling it around you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Scheinberg says advance ticket sales are up 37% over last year, and cites a JPMorgan study that return-to-office rates at some Manhattan office towers have hit 78% \u2014 a key stat for a show that draws many consumers after work to its west-side, Javits Center location. Like the Detroit Auto Show returning to its traditional January date, the New York Show relies on a vibrant Manhattan to make it go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThis is our third since the COVID-19 pandemic, and it\u2019s a world of difference,\u201d he said. \u201cThe streets are jammed with people again, and life is back to normal in New York.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Show organizers concede the media landscape has changed and that auto shows are no longer the focus of big media reveals. Just as ad dollars now chase eyeballs across a media landscape that has diversified beyond broadcast TV and newspapers to cable and internet, so have automakers moved vehicle debuts to encompass a diverse media landscape that includes YouTube, sporting events, and Instagram influencers.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2024\/03\/25\/PDTN\/73097651007-nyc-show-24-setupmustang-60.jpg?width=660&amp;height=382&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Ford sets up a celebration of Mustang's 60th birthday at the 2024 New York Auto Show\" width=\"534\" height=\"309\" \/><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><em>Ford sets up a celebration of Mustang&#8217;s 60th birthday at the 2024 New York Auto Show. Thousands of fans streaming to Barclays saw the Kicks \u201cunboxed\u201d in an oversized sneaker shoebox. They did it here because it\u2019s a major media market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The New York Show is a much smaller version of its early 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century heyday when it typically hosted dozens of model reveals to packed media galleries and brands took up three of its enormous exhibition halls. This year, there will be just seven manufacturers&#8217; press conferences. As in Detroit, LA, and Chicago, numerous brands have exited the floor leaving only the main exhibition hall occupied by automakers. Henry Payne, The Detroit News<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cGerman luxury automakers have gone in a different direction,\u201d said Scheinberg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But in the space they once occupied are sprawling indoor electric tracks featuring ride-alongs in new electric cars from multiple automakers. It is an evolution of the show at an opportune time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThe EV test tracks at all these shows is an extension of what auto shows are all about \u2014 showing customers what\u2019s new in cars. Not just EVs, but all the technology inside,\u201d said Stephanie Brinley, S&amp;P Global associate director of auto intelligence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The test tracks give consumers the opportunity to experience electric vehicles as governments from New York to California to the federal EPA are phasing out sales of popular, gas-powered vehicles over the next 10 years. New York\u2019s electric track has expanded this year to include EVs from Cadillac, Lucid, and Lexus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201c(Auto analysis firm) JD Power found that eight out of ten customers would consider and electric vehicles after having the chance to drive them\u201d said Scheinberg.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The EV track joins ride-along experiences embracing another industry trend: off-roading. Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco off-road warriors will square off with dueling test tracks. Camp Jeep marks a coup for New York as Stellantis brands \u2014 Chrysler, Dodge, Ram and Jeep, Maserati and FIAT \u2014 will not be at the auto show, consistent with its absence at other shows in 2024. However, Stellantis said it would evaluate show spends on \u201ca case-by-case basis, while prioritizing opportunities for consumers to experience our vehicles first-hand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cCamp Jeep crushes it every year here,\u201d said Scheinberg. \u201cThey get a lot of leads. New York Auto Show, New York Auto Show<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Hyundai will debut updates of its best-selling Tucson and Santa Fe SUVs; its luxury brand Genesis will introduce a new model; and Kia will unveil an all-new, compact K4 sedan that replaces the Forte. Genesis has long used New York for spectacular new reveals (it memorably unveiled its Mint EV concept in the middle of Hudson Yards in 2019), and is expected to to showcase another newsmaker this year as it rushes to go all-EV by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThe Korean brands have been very supportive of auto shows \u2014 it\u2019s part of their business strategy,\u201d said auto analyst Brinley. \u201cGenesis has an anchor in Manhattan with its Genesis House showcase, so the show backs that up. Henry Payne, The Detroit News<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Porsche\u2019s presence (it was absent from Detroit, Chicago, and Los Angeles shows) dovetails with the Big Apple\u2019s high-income demographic, and TV personality and car collector Michael Strahan will take delivery of his Porsche 964-based Tedson supercar at the show. Javits also will showcase its unique exotics display of hypercars. Among them will be the latest Rimac \u2014 the world\u2019s fastest electric sportscar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThe sophistication of this industry is extraordinary,\u201d said Scheinberg. \u201cBut you can\u2019t show it all in a TV commercial.
