{"id":32332,"date":"2024-02-29T22:05:17","date_gmt":"2024-03-01T02:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/henrypayne.com\/?p=32332"},"modified":"2024-02-29T22:05:17","modified_gmt":"2024-03-01T02:05:17","slug":"autorama-2024-batmobiles-ridlers-and-evel-kneivel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/henrypayne.com\/index.php\/2024\/02\/autorama-2024-batmobiles-ridlers-and-evel-kneivel","title":{"rendered":"Autorama 2024: Batmobiles, Ridlers, and Evel Kneivel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>Detroit<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 Huntington Place is going to be filled with bats, bikes, and Beach Boys this weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The 71<sup>st<\/sup>\u00a0annual Detroit Autorama, the world\u2019s biggest hot rod show, rolls into Detroit&#8217;s Huntington Place this weekend, March 1-3, bringing 800 chopped, decked, and channeled hot rods \u2014 and a whole lot of sidekicks. Sidekicks like five generations of Batmobiles, three Evel Kneivel stunt vehicles, and the 1931 Chevy Roadster that was the backdrop for the Beach Boys 1964 Ed Sullivan Show appearance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe had to turn away 150 entrants ths year. I have never seen this kind of enthusiasm,\u201d said Championship Auto Shows President and Autorama Producer Pete Toundas as he walked through the sprawling show. \u201cWe have filled up local hotels There are a lot of people who want to build one more great car.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_gl_vg\" data-c-tc=\"13\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2024\/02\/29\/PDTN\/72796386007-20240229-dgautorama-0812.jpg?width=990&amp;height=660&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" width=\"578\" height=\"385\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_t gnt_em_t__hb\" data-c-et=\"The 71st annual Detroit Autorama\" aria-label=\"Hundreds of vehicles on display at the 71st annual Detroit Autorama\">\n<div class=\"gnt_em_mo_cap gnt_em_mo_cc__swd\"><em>Hundreds of vehicles are on display at Autorama, inside Huntington Place, in Detroit, February 29, 2024. David Guralnick, The Detroit News<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Great cars like the 14 custom builds that will be competing for the hot rod world\u2019s ultimate prize, the Ridler Award. \u201cBitchin\u2019 Rides\u201d TV star Dave Kindig, 53, entered the Ridler for the first time this year and has brought a beauty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThis is my dream car, starting with a 1953 Chevy Corvette C1,\u201d he said, flipping pages on a book that catalogues the car\u2019s five-year development. \u201cBut Chevy only built convertibles, of the first generation, so this is my version if they had built a coupe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The gorgeous red coupe is custom built from the ground up but features signature features from some of Kindig\u2019s favorites: the fascia is inspired by the \u201953 \u2018Vette, the tail by a modern Aston Martin DB-9, the steering wheel from a C8 Corvette, and the coupe shape from GM\u2019s classic Corvair concept.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Under the hood? A honkin\u2019, 3,000-horsepower, 9.2-liter V-12 engine assembled in Australia. \u201cThe C1 Corvettes were made with 6-cylinder engines, so we decided to double it,\u201d smiled Kindig, who hails from Salt Lake City. Ridler contenders will be narrowed to the Great Eight on Friday with the winner crowned on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Kindig hopes his creation will join classics like the 1964 Autorama winner, a customized, 1931 Chevy owned by John Sbigato, 54, from New Jersey. Sbigato\u2019s father built the yellow beauty and Beach Boys lead singer Brian Wilson was so taken with it, he asked that it appear with the band on the Ed Sullivan Show.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2024\/02\/29\/PDTN\/72796566007-autorama-24-beach-boys-chevysbrigato.jpg?width=990&amp;height=558&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" width=\"605\" height=\"341\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_mo_cap gnt_em_mo_cc__swd\"><em>John Sbrigato, 54, of New Jersey with the 1931 Chevy dubbed &#8220;the Beach Boys Roadster.&#8221;<\/em><\/div>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_mo_crd gnt_em_mo_cc__swd\"><em>Henry Payne, The Detroit News<\/em><\/div>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The car subsequently earned the nickname \u201cThe Beach Boys Roadster,\u201d and the floor display features the car against a backdrop of its famed TV appearance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Other TV notables on the show floor include the 1966 Batmobile designed by Hollywood design legend, George Barris, for the popular show starring Adam West. The effort failed and the aircraft still bears the scars from that failed flight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Autorama is heavy on nostalgia. Chuck Miller is back at the show with his 29<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0annual Cavalcade of Customs display of classic 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s custom cars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThere are affordable, fun customs that Q-tips put together in their garages and that still drive on the road,\u201d smiled Miller, referring to the vehicles\u2019 white-haired (Q-tip) owners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But Autorama is attracting a new generation of builder, too. Nineteen-year old twins Devin and Nick Paul of Clinton Township entered their gorgeous, black, heavily-modified 1994 Chevy S-10 pickup in the show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cMy dad was into cars, and they have always been a part of our life,\u201d said Devin. \u201cBut my brother and I like the 1980s and 1990s cars like Pontiac Trans Ams and the Chevy pickups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Taylor Carey, 22, of Gregory is a Michigan State University student who was named one of six 2024 Next Gen Modifiers. A veterinarian science student by day, she drag races her modified 2011 Cadillac CTS-V on weekends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cYoung people are growing the sport,\u201d said Toundas. \u201cWhether through family or video games or movies like \u2018Fast and Furious,\u2019 they bring new ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Families of all ages will enjoy the experience, spiced with a little celebrity. In addition to Ridler entry Kindig, \u201cFast and Furious\u201d movie actor Noel Gugliemi wil be signing autographs as well as rock legend Dee Snider of Twisted Sister fame.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Other notable vehicles on the floor include GM\u2019s 50-millionth production car \u2014 a completely gold plated 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air Coupe \u2014 and the long lost \u201cUncertain-T,\u201d and iconic, 1965 hot rod with a distinct, slanted cabin that Galpin Motors is restoring after it disappeared for 50 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>Autorama<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Friday, March 1, 12 PM &#8211; 10 PM<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Saturday, March 2, 9 AM &#8211; 10 PM<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Sunday, March 3, 10 AM &#8211; 7 PM<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">General Admission $27, Children 6-12 $10, Children 5 and Under Free<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>Henry Payne is auto critic for The Detroit News.
