GM and other automakers are trying to figure out what to do with their gas-powered muscle and sports cars in the transition to electric vehicles to meet tightening emissions regulations.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2023\/12\/14\/PDTN\/71923932007-2024-chevroletcamarosscollectorsedition.jpg?width=980&amp;height=533&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Front 3\/4 view of 2024 Chevrolet Camaro SS Collector\u2019s Edition in Panther Black Metallic Tintcoat. Preproduction model shown.\" data-c-credit=\"Chevy Camero\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Chevrolet has been mum on what&#8217;s next for the sports car, but when the brand\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/media.chevrolet.com\/media\/us\/en\/chevrolet\/home.detail.html\/content\/Pages\/news\/us\/en\/2023\/mar\/0322-camaro.html\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">declared its demise in March<\/a>, Scott Bell, Chevy&#8217;s vice president, said: \u201cWhile we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro\u2019s story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The Detroit News requested interviews with brand leaders about the Camaro&#8217;s future but received emailed responses instead. Brad Franz, director of Chevrolet car and crossover marketing, said in a statement this week to The News, &#8220;As we\u2019ve said, we\u2019re not announcing an immediate successor at this time. But performance remains an important part of Chevrolet\u2019s DNA.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-features_general_motors-2\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"llx\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Franz added that &#8220;at the conclusion of model year 2024, the sixth generation Camaro will have completed a strong nine-year lifecycle. Chevrolet made the decision now as a part of continuously evaluating our portfolio offerings for progress toward our EV future and sales demand.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Chevrolet is offering\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/2023\/01\/17\/e-ray-chevy-unveils-the-first-all-wheel-drive-hybrid-655-hp-corvette\/69792412007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">the Corvette E-Ray hybrid<\/a>\u00a0but still has the gas version of the two-seater sports car it&#8217;s produced continuously for 70 years. As Dodge wraps production of the gas-powered Charger and Challenger, the Stellantis muscle-car brand plans to roll out a battery-powered Charger in mid-2024.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2023\/12\/14\/PDTN\/71915963007-ford-mustang-g-tfr.jpg?width=980&amp;height=552&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Still galloping: Unlike its Camaro and Charger\/Challenger pony car competitors, the Ford Mustang is outrunning government emissions regulations, at least for now.\" width=\"538\" height=\"303\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2023\/12\/14\/PDTN\/71915963007-ford-mustang-g-tfr.jpg?width=980&amp;height=552&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" srcset=\"\/gcdn\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2023\/12\/14\/PDTN\/71915963007-ford-mustang-g-tfr.jpg?width=1960&amp;height=1104&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" alt=\"Still galloping: Unlike its Camaro and Charger\/Challenger pony car competitors, the Ford Mustang is outrunning government emissions regulations, at least for now.\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_img_ccw gnt_em_img_ccw__cap gnt_em_img_ccw__crd\" data-c-caption=\"Still galloping: Unlike its Camaro and Charger\/Challenger pony car competitors, the Ford Mustang is outrunning government emissions regulations, at least for now.\" data-c-credit=\"Henry Payne, The Detroit News\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Meanwhile, Ford Motor Co. is sticking with its gas-powered Mustang, revealing\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/ford\/2022\/09\/15\/ford-mustang-2024-seventh-generation-detroit-auto-show\/8004452001\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">the seventh generation in 2022<\/a>, though it also sells the all-electric Mustang Mach-E.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">For Camaro to go electric may not be easy &#8220;with the skepticism around electrification,&#8221; said Ivan Drury, director of insights at Edmunds Inc., a vehicle information website.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-features_general_motors-3\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"llx\" data-x-c=\"2\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But the performance levels of EVs, which offer instant, seamless torque, could be enough for enthusiasts who just want to drive fast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;There&#8217;s so much compromise of owning a sports car that if all you care about is zero-to-60, just buy yourself an EV,&#8221; Drury said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t care what it is. It&#8217;ll be fast enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Whatever the powertrain, Karl Brauer, executive analyst at iseecars.com, an automotive research website, is hoping Camaro&#8217;s second comeback is better than its first. Chevy halted production of the fourth-generation Camaro after 2002 and brought it back for a fifth generation in 2010.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;I would love to see them do what they should have done the first time around, which is break from the past,&#8221; by making a car that just has some subtle references to the previous generations, he said. &#8220;Of course, it will be electrified &#8230; but styling-wise and drivetrain-wise, there should be no limitations. It should be as new and cutting edge as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-features_general_motors-4\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"llx\" data-x-c=\"3\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"gnt_ar_b_h2\">A &#8216;passion product&#8217; with challenges<\/h2>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The first cancellation of the Camaro came after 35 years of production, beginning with the 1967 model year. When GM announced in 2001 that it was axing the Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird, the automaker said sports car sales had fallen 53% from 1990 to 2000,\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2001\/09\/25\/companies\/camaro\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">CNN reported then<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">When it came back, Camaro skated to success on the back of its stardom as Bumblebee in &#8220;Transformers.&#8221; The Camaro performed well in the early 2010s. In 2011, Camaro had a 31% share of the muscle car segment, according to data from Edmunds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">To Franz, the &#8220;Camaro is a passion product.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;It has developed a fan base across the world and has brought people into Chevrolet dealerships for generations,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The sixth generation specifically represented athleticism and composure \u2014 exuding confidence on the road and dominance on the track.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/-mm-\/4f77209a481fb74117e75bd348bbed2c5a6dee8b\/c=0-435-2000-1565\/local\/-\/media\/2015\/05\/15\/DetroitNews\/DetroitNews\/635672943020741904-27-2010-Gen-5-Camaro-SS.jpg?width=980&amp;height=554&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"The 2010 Camaro SS officially debuted as the fifth generation of the sports car. Sales of the revived icon were strong in its first several years.\" data-c-credit=\"GM\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But Brauer remembers seeing the Camaro&#8217;s revived, 2010 version for the first time and feeling disappointed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;When it first arrived, I wasn&#8217;t a fan,&#8221; he said. \u201cIt looked like a wrong version, or a messed-up version, of a \u201869 Camaro.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The car also had problems, including visibility issues, an uncomfortable steering wheel and \u201cterrible ergonomics,\u201d Brauer said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-features_general_motors-5\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"llx\" data-x-c=\"4\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIt was just these little things. There wasn&#8217;t any big train-wreck issue,\u201d Brauer said. \u201cIf you just kind of looked at it or dealt with it for a long time, it was like, \u2018I&#8217;m not really a fan.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Brauer felt better about the car after its mid-cycle refresh, but he still \u201cdidn\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIn my mind, it never felt as well-executed as its competitors,\u201d Brauer said. \u201cMustang and Challenger were just better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Sales data from Edmunds show the Camaro&#8217;s struggles. Even if it was<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/media.gm.com\/media\/us\/en\/chevrolet\/news.detail.html\/content\/Pages\/news\/us\/en\/2014\/Jun\/0619-chevy-transformers.html\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">\u00a0a shape-shifting star<\/a>\u00a0in Michael Bay&#8217;s &#8220;Transformers&#8221; movies, the Camaro consistently failed to surpass its crosstown rivals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The Camaro has 13% of the market, placing last in the muscle-car segment, which includes the Corvette, Charger, Challenger and Mustang, according to Edmunds&#8217; data. The Charger leads the segment with 33%, followed by Mustang at 20%, Challenger at 19% and Corvette at 14%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The Camaro&#8217;s current market share is better than 2022&#8217;s 10% and 2021&#8217;s 9% but far from the 20.7% it had in 2017 and the 24.8% share in 2013.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;Camaro production has been closely managed in recent years to maintain healthy demand and has been one of our fastest-turning products,&#8221; Frantz said. &#8220;The decision to end production of Camaro comes as a result of balancing several business decisions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-features_general_motors-6\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"llx\" data-x-c=\"5\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">In a filing to the state on Thursday, GM said 369 employees at the Lansing Grand River plant\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/chrysler\/2023\/12\/14\/gm-layoffs-autoworkers-uaw-chevrolet-camaro-bolt-production-end\/71923598007\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">would be laid off<\/a>\u00a0because of the loss of the Camaro, which is built there alongside the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The company did say it &#8220;anticipates having job opportunities for all impacted team members.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Under the new United Auto Workers-GM contract ratified in November, the Lansing plant will receive a $1.25 billion investment\u00a0for future EVs. But he didn\u2019t give up, helping lead an internal team of Camaro advocates that brought the pony back from the grave in 2010. The fifth-generation model was met with wide acclaim, topping the muscle car sales charts from 2010-14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Now that the Camaro has been nixed again, Settlemire feels \u201ca similar void.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-features_general_motors-7\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"llx\" data-x-c=\"6\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIn the current regulatory environment, GM can\u2019t make both a V-8 Corvette and Camaro,\u201d Settlemire, who hung up his GM hat in 2016, said of government rules forcing an end to internal combustion engines by 2035. \u201cI like to say the car is on hiatus. I hope that someone is fighting to keep the Camaro alive inside GM.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Settlemire, who lives in Mars, Pennsylvania, still owns three Camaros: a red 2010 RS that his mother once drove; a yellow 2008 SS RS manual that was part of the pre-production, fifth-gen test fleet; and a silver 2002 SS Brickyard Festival model in pace car livery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The license plate on the 2002 SS reads \u201cF-BODFATHER.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe\u2019ve lived through this before, and we saw club participation slightly decline,\u201d said Paul Denski, 68, of Plymouth, who is president of the Eastern Michigan Camaro Club. \u201cBut when it came back, Chevy hit a home run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Like a lot of Camaro faithful, Denski fears it will return as an electric vehicle because of government emissions rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cCamaro is a car for America\u2019s back roads. And I don\u2019t see electric chargers coming to the bottom of Tail of the Dragon anytime soon,\u201d said Denski, who has taken frequent trips to Florida in a Camaro \u2014 including along the famed, rural, 11-mile section of U.S. 129 through North Carolina. \u201cI don\u2019t like government saying we all have to go EV. I don\u2019t have a choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-features_general_motors-8\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"llx\" data-x-c=\"7\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Denski said the Camaro club will stay healthy \u201cbecause it\u2019s all about the people you meet.
