The state-of-the-art Rolling Road Wind Tunnel\u2014fed by a 26-foot tall, 7,000-horsepower wind turbine\u2014is part of the development of a new generation of Ford vehicles, including the 2024 Mustang.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_gl gnt_em__el\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/picture-gallery\/media\/photo\/2023\/06\/13\/gallery-ford-rolling-road-wind-tunnel\/12096668002\/\" data-t-l=\":l|l|c|view gallery:inline promo\" aria-label=\"View Gallery - Gallery: Ford Rolling Road Wind Tunnel\" data-g-r=\"nav_mo\" data-g-tn=\"pgcss\" data-g-mtn=\"pg12096668002\" data-g-moh=\"hpgm\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-expanded=\"false\" data-c-id=\"12096668002\"><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/presto\/2023\/06\/13\/PDTN\/ecf11559-82b9-4d7a-9b4d-5ab73e2dff0a-FordWindTunnel_airstream.jpg?width=990&amp;height=558&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" \/><\/a>&#8220;We spent approximately 250 hours in the wind tunnel developing the new Mustang,\u201d said Mustang and Bronco aerodynamicist Jonathan Gesek. \u201cThe aerodynamics of the Mustang Dark Horse have created the most track-capable 5.0-liter Mustang to date.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The industrial facility is long way from the simple aerodynamic tricks featured in the hit\u00a0<em>Ford v. Ferrari<\/em>\u00a0movie in which engineers attached flags to cars on test tracks to examine air flow. RRWT brings the track to the car by constructing an enormous donut with a wind turbine on one side and test vehicles strapped down in a test bay on the other.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-2\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Secured by four, sturdy floor struts that double as data collectors, cars then run on four separate belts under each wheel &#8211; or an interchangeable fifth center belt\u2014capable of 200 mph speeds. Combined with a remade front air spoiler and splitter, the features create downforce so the pony car can corner faster.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-3\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Wind tunnels came into common use in the mid-1960s on race cars like Porsches as engineers applied Bernoulli&#8217;s principle of fluid dynamics used to lift airplanes off the ground\u2014except in reverse. The RRWT is an advance on the last wind tunnel Ford built in 1999 and improves on the 2008-vintage Windshear facility\u2014a 180 mph-capable tunnel in Concord, North Carolina\u2014that has been used to develop NASCAR and IndyCar racers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Gesek said the Mustang uses a wind tunnel perhaps three times more often than a typical sedan. The turbine was constructed by TLT Turbo in Germany and is driven by a 5.4 megawatt motor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThe closer we can get to reality in the lab, the better and faster we can create more energy efficient vehicles with great on-road and track stability,\u201d said Toth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Tailored aerodynamics are applied across Ford\u2019s 60 vehicle lineup. For passenger vehicles, the goal is low drag. The nickel-coated turntable, for example, is separated by just 1.5 millimeters from the surrounding floor.
