The race was not as kind to Bloomfield Hills-based Team Penske as its trio of Porsche hypercars struggled with mechanical difficulties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Auto racing is an international currency trading in excellence, and motorsports has taken on a high profile as performance brands compete in global markets. On Le Mans\u2019 100th anniversary, Detroit automakers were front and center selling everything from Cadillac elegance to NASCAR muscle.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_gl gnt_em__el\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/picture-gallery\/media\/photo\/2023\/06\/13\/gallery-detroit-le-mans-2023\/12095559002\/\" data-t-l=\":l|l|c|view gallery:inline promo\" aria-label=\"View Gallery - Gallery: Detroit at Le Mans 2023\" data-g-r=\"nav_mo\" data-g-tn=\"pgcss\" data-g-mtn=\"pg12095559002\" data-g-moh=\"hpgm\" aria-haspopup=\"dialog\" aria-expanded=\"false\" data-c-id=\"12095559002\"><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/presto\/2023\/06\/12\/PDTN\/f4a6a64a-883d-4cfe-9624-632378b702ac-LeMans2023_NASCAR-USflag.jpg?width=990&amp;height=660&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" \/><\/a>\u201cThis is a really special time in racing. We have so many manufacturers with this new hybrid platform (that) are going to be able to race together,\u201d said General Motors Co. vice president for performance and motorsports Jim Campbell, referencing new regulations that allow North American and European race cars to compete in the same so-called \u201chypercar\u201d class for the first time in decades. \u201cWe have, I think, 14 different manufacturers racing together. The crowds that came out are incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-2\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The new, top-shelf hypercar class was powered, for the first time, by hybrid powertrains as manufacturers use the harsh demands of endurance racing to explore the limits of batteries that global governments are forcing on automakers. Still, given the limitations of battery endurance at high speeds, hybrid components were a small part of drivetrains powered by V-8 and V-6 gas engines. To feel like it was out of reach and then watch this team claw back and get victory out of defeat\u2019s grasp was really special.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Cadillac\u2019s podium finish was the brand\u2019s first at Le Mans. The #2 and #3 Caddy V-Series.R race cars, fielded by Ganassi Racing of IndyCar fame, finished 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0and 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0with the #2 car even leading some laps. Ultimately, hybrid hypercars from Ferrari (first overall) and Toyota proved too quick, but the Cadillacs\u2019 thundering, 5.5-liter V-8 engines thrilled. This year, a modified NASCAR Chevy Camaro got the Garage 56 nod. It became an instant fan favorite, wowing French crowds with its earth-shaking sound \u2014 and lap times that were quicker than the GTE Am Corvette.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-4\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIt\u2019s pretty special. He\u2019ll have to wait another year.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-5\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The trio of Porsche 963 cars showed good pace early on Saturday with the #75 car (celebrating Porsche \u2018s 75 years) pacing the field. But mechanical and electronic gremlins \u2014 and a slew of shunts \u2014 ultimately plagued all three cars. The #6 car was the best Penske result, finishing ninth overall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;That was a piece of hard work for the team,&#8221; says Jonathan Diuguid, managing director of Porsche Penske Motorsport. &#8220;We may have suffered blows, but we also take positives with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" src=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/gcdn\/presto\/2023\/06\/12\/PDTN\/0fba4f68-b40f-4585-a31a-8f0dc1556873-LeMans2023_penske-porsche-field.jpg?width=660&amp;height=441&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Tough race for the Porsche-Penske team and their trio of 963 hypercars.\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_img_ccw gnt_em_img_ccw__cap gnt_em_img_ccw__crd\" data-c-caption=\"Tough race for the Porsche-Penske team and their trio of 963 hypercars.\" data-c-credit=\"Porsche, Porsche\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Hypercar-class racers\u2019 complicated hybrid-electric systems proved problematic across multiple teams with even the winning Ferrari having a nerve-racking moment at its last pit stop when the car wouldn\u2019t start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">On to the 2024 Le Mans, when Detroit\u2019s presence will grow again.
