Admission is free and attendees are asked to give a donation in return for seeing one of the country\u2019s most acclaimed car collections. It\u2019s not as easy as bringing home an electric motor and putting it in your car. It can be a dangerous thing to do and you\u2019ll probably kill yourself because of the electric components. So (GM) certificated us for this program, and I bought a 1972 El Camino. We swapped out the gas engine for a GM electric motor and it\u2019s getting a lot of attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-2\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Lingenfelter\u2019s core business is modifying GM sportscars and trucks. And as the General pushes electrification, the veteran businessman sees more customers wanting to take advantage of electric muscle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The El Camino \u2014 complete with electric components stuffed under the hood where an engine used to be \u2014 sits cheek-to-jowl with gas-fired classics like the 1954 Chevrolet Corvette EX-87 \u201cDuntov Mule\u201d (the first V8-powered \u2018Vette) and the latest addition to the collection: a 2023 Ferrari Roma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI\u2019ve got a sweet tooth for Ferraris,\u201d Lingenfelter said with a smile.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2023\/04\/20\/PDTN\/11798047-045e-48e2-84a5-f0c9ac81435e-LingenfelterCollection_Ken.jpg?width=660&amp;height=438&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2023\/04\/20\/PDTN\/11798047-045e-48e2-84a5-f0c9ac81435e-LingenfelterCollection_Ken.jpg?width=1320&amp;height=876&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" alt=\"Lingenfelter Collection: Ken Lingenfelter\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_img_ccw gnt_em_img_ccw__cap gnt_em_img_ccw__crd\" data-c-caption=\"Lingenfelter Collection: Ken Lingenfelter\" data-c-credit=\"Henry Payne, The Detroit News\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">There are other exotics too, including Porsches, a Maserati and a Lamborghini. And some unusual creatures like a 1984 Bitter SC Coupe, 1974 AMC Gremlin, 1973 Opel GT, and \u201881 DeLorean. But GM muscle is the meat and potatoes of the collection: Red meat like a split-window 1963 Corvette.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-3\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI saw the 1963 split window as a 10-year old at the GM Proving Grounds and fell in love,\u201d said Lingenfelter, whose father was a GM executive. \u201cSo there is a full room of Corvettes. And some of the latest Lingenfelter productions \u2014 GM cars we\u2019ve built for road racing, drag racing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Ken\u2019s passion is shared by his wife, Kristen, who is the hot shoe in the family these days. I was in high school at Dearborn High, and it was the only Chevy in the parking lot \u2014 probably because everyone worked for Ford,\u201d he remembers. \u201cThere was a guy in a 302 Mustang who kept bugging me and bugging me, trying to trip me up in the hallways. We almost came to blows, so we were gonna solve all our issues with a drag race out on Outer Drive in front of school \u2014 which was terrible judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-4\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">He continued: \u201cEverybody knew we were gonna drag. Half the school was out there, and I smoked this guy so bad in the Camaro it was embarrassing. Got my self in a lot of trouble with the Dearborn Police at school so, as a result, I got expelled for awhile. The mission of the Lingenfelter Collection has always been charity fundraisers (the collection hosts about 60 throughout the year), of which the cancer society benefit is one of the biggest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI lost my mother, father, and sister to cancer, so I\u2019m focused on making sure others don\u2019t suffer like they did,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>Henry Payne is auto critic for The Detroit News.
