The Camaro\u2019s demise follows the discontinuation of Dodge\u2019s popular Challenger coupe at the end of this year. V8-powered cars like the Camaro are under intense regulatory pressure amid a government-led transition to electric vehicles, but \u2014 unlike the best-selling Challenger \u2014 Camaro had fallen on hard sales times since its sixth-generation remake in 2016.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cAs we prepare to say goodbye to the current generation Camaro, it is difficult to overstate our gratitude to every Camaro customer, Camaro assembly line employee and race fan,\u201d said Chevy Vice President Scott Bell. \u201cWhile we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured, this is not the end of Camaro\u2019s story.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2023\/03\/22\/PDTN\/4993c930-ddbe-40f3-a089-effca5f2ad92-AP23081630151064.jpg?crop=1024,596,x0,y20&amp;width=660&amp;height=385&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"The sixth generation of the Chevy Camaro will be the last, at least for now.\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_img_ccw gnt_em_img_ccw__cap gnt_em_img_ccw__crd\" data-c-caption=\"The sixth generation of the Chevy Camaro will be the last, at least for now.\" data-c-credit=\"Gene J. Puskar, AP, File\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The end may be a new beginning.\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a42097052\/gm-escalade-camaro-brands\/\" data-t-l=\":b|e|k|${u}\">Car and Driver reports<\/a>\u00a0that General Motors Co. is moving towards a sub-brand strategy focused on Camaro, Corvette and Escalade as the company remakes its portfolio. The enthusiast magazine reports that a Camaro SUV will be introduced in 2025 on GM\u2019s Ultium battery platform just as a Corvette sub-brand unveils an Ultium-based SUV and sedan to complement its V8-powered sports car.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-features_general_motors-2\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Ford pioneered the muscle-car sub-brand idea in 2021 with the electric Mustang Mach-E and Ford credits its success in racking up emissions credits for the continuation of the V8-powered Mustang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe&#8217;re not saying anything specific right now,\u201d Chevrolet spokesman Trevor Thompkins told the Associated Press about Camaro\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The Camaro debuted in 1967 in the wake of the wildly successful Mustang pony car. Though shy of Mustang\u2019s massive 470,000-plus sales, the Camaro sold an impressive 220,906 units in its inaugural year and continued strong sales into the 1970s as the muscle car segment grew to include such Woodward Dream Cruise classics as its sister Pontiac Firebird, Dodge Challenger, AMC Javelin and Plymouth Barracuda. It outsold both the Mustang (which has been sold continuously since 1964) and the Challenger (reborn in 2008) for five straight years, hitting nearly 90,000 units annually on the strength of its edgy retro styling and RS, SS and Z\/28 performance models.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"ad-slot-7103-mi-detroit-C1561-native-article_link-money-autos-features_general_motors-3\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">A controversial sixth-generation redesign in 2016 ended the Camaro\u2019s reign at No. 1. Sharing the same athletic platform as the Cadillac ATS, the Camaro won huzzahs for its performance \u2014 embodied by the 650-horsepower ZL1 1LE, the fastest Camaro ever around GM\u2019s Milford Proving Grounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But buyers and media reviews complained the sports car was hard to see out of and was ergonomically inefficient inside.
