This is my first glimpse of the track, and it&#8217;s\u00a0got a lot of character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The 10-turn circuit\u2019s biggest character is a 7\/10s-of-a-mile long main straight (similar to the epic, main straightaway at Road America Raceway in Wisconsin) down\u00a0Jefferson Avenue running east-to-west from Rivard Street to a 180-degree Turn One at Griswold. It will likely be a very busy intersection as cars will be merging back onto the track there from the twin\u00a0pit lanes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Then the field will climb up Rivard \u2014 across Woodbridge \u2014\u00a0to the final, off-camber, Turn\u00a010\u00a0lefthander back onto East Jefferson Avenue. This is the Atwater Street section of the course along the waterfront.\" data-c-credit=\"Henry Payne, The Detroit News\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">At 1.7 miles total, the new track is shorter than the original, 2.5-mile Formula One circuit (and the 2.35-mile Belle Isle track). That will mean quicker laps. Cadillac racing driver Renger Van Der Zande, who won the IMSA Weathertech sportscar race Saturday, told Autoweek he expects laps in the 1.10-minute range. The shorter length also promises better access to downtown, which has been reborn since the &#8217;90s with restaurants, hotels and shops that offer attractions to fans beyond the competition on track.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIt\u2019s a whole different city now,\u201d said Reuss, who was flanked by a trio of mid-engine Corvettes, including the 670-horsepower Z06 Detroit GP pace car. \u201cWe are seeing the rebirth of Detroit. Fans will also have open access to activation areas including Spirit Plaza, Hart Plaza and the Riverwalk, which will have feature music, food and games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cWe had an amazing year on Belle Isle with the\u00a0biggest crowds we\u2019ve seen in 13 years,\u201d said GP Chairman Denker,\u00a0who then looked ahead to 2023. \u201cThere are 12 cities in the world that have downtown racing.
