Two weeks after the quiet Cadillac Lyriq \u2014 the first model in all-electric-by-2030 lineup \u2014 opened for customer orders, Cadillac will headline the Detroit Grand Prix with its window-rattling, V8-powered\u00a0Cadillac DPi-V.R IMSA Weathertech sports car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Don&#8217;t expect to see the\u00a0Lyriq on Belle Isle. The so-called GTP Hypercar will gain a rear-axle electric motor in an attempt to build a bridge to electrification. But the V-8 monster is more in line with the brand\u2019s gas-powered, V-series performance models than the Lyriq EV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Auto racing has long been a key piece of performance vehicle\u00a0marketing. The\u00a0paradox of\u00a0Cadillac\u2019s racing and consumer futures shines a light on\u00a0the difficulties EVs face as they try to become more than a niche consumer market. As you look at the Cadillac entries, we will be racing next year, (those) vehicles will also have an internal combustion engine and hybridization which will develop some electrification benefits to the vehicles during the race,\u201d said GM\u2019s U.S. vice president for motorsports, Jim Campbell, in an interview here before the race weekend kicks off. \u201cThat hybrid piece winds up being a pivot piece as well . . . as racing organizations around the world determine where electrification fits into their racing future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Interestingly, GM was a pioneer in hybrid drivetrains at the turn of the 21st\u00a0century before shelving\u00a0the technology in 2019 when the last Chevrolet Volt rolled off the assembly line. Next year, IndyCar is going hybrid, even in NASCAR (the) next-gen car is a Chevy V-8, but there is room in the packaging for a potential hybrid down the road.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">For now, the V-8 powered IMSA prototype class is the ideal ambassador for the brand&#8217;s\u00a0halo performance cars \u2014 whether the Escalade-V super-ute or sedans like the 668-horse CT5-V Blackwing, armed with the same\u00a0supercharged\u00a0V-8 engine as the Escalade-V.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;The Blackwings \u2014 whether CT4-V or CT5-V or Escalade-V\u00a0\u2014 they are going to be around for a period of time, and so we are going to leverage what we do on\u00a0track with our V-8 to link what we do in our showroom,&#8221; said Campbell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Driving home the connection, Cadillac DPi-V.R racer Renger Van Der Zande drove a CT5-V Blackwing to Belle Isle on May 16\u00a0after the IMSA Weathertech series&#8217;\u00a0Mid-Ohio stop to promote the Detroit IMSA race.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Van Der Zande\u2019s rubber-burning exploits were captured for\u00a0promotional video \u2014\u00a0very on brand for Caddy racing, if not the silent electric future. He ended his journey with a visit to GM\u2019s technical center, where he met with engineers who are developing the 2023 race cars\u2019 V-8 hybrid engine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI\u2019m a race car driver and they want me to race those cars as fast as I can and win races. So we want to be on their radar screen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The formula has worked for decades, going back to Cadillac\u2019s first Le Mans race car in 1950. Future EV racing cars are uncertain.\" data-c-credit=\"Henry Payne, The Detroit News\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">On the other side of the pond, European endurance racing featured\u00a0diesel-powered prototypes when European governments declared diesel the future of mobility at the turn of the 21st century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But now, as the global manufacturers adapt to battery-power\u00a0mandates, the Detroit Grand Prix weekend suggests a divergence between racing and production drivetrains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Manufacturers have struggled with marrying EVs and racing. Jaguar, for example, introduced its first electric vehicle, the I-Pace, alongside the Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy \u2014 an international race series that ran two seasons before being canceled in mid-2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cJaguar Land Rover was keen to showcase . . . \u00a0its \u2018Destination Zero\u2019 initiative that outlined developing battery electric vehicle technology through electric racing,\u201d reported TheRace.com. \u201cHowever, the I-Pace series struggled to make an impact in the motorsport industry with grids averaging 12 cars in its first campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Once billed as a Tesla-killer, the I-Pace has struggled with just 9,970 in U.S. sales in 2021, down 39% since 2019.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_img\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"gnt_em_img_i\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2022\/06\/02\/PDTN\/e9e70e65-ca9a-4bff-92cd-27a53912b5b6-ChevyDisplay_corvetteC8R-others.jpg?width=660&amp;height=372&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2022\/06\/02\/PDTN\/e9e70e65-ca9a-4bff-92cd-27a53912b5b6-ChevyDisplay_corvetteC8R-others.jpg?width=1320&amp;height=744&amp;fit=crop&amp;format=pjpg&amp;auto=webp 2x\" alt=\"The Chevrolet Corvette C8.R race anchors Chevy's Belle Isle display and helps market its production brethren.\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"gnt_em_img_ccw gnt_em_img_ccw__cap gnt_em_img_ccw__crd\" data-c-caption=\"The Chevrolet Corvette C8.R race anchors Chevy's Belle Isle display and helps market its production brethren.\" data-c-credit=\"Henry Payne, The Detroit News\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">While GM\u2019s racing programs (it also showcases the V8-powered Corvette in IMSA\u2019s GTD class) continue to highlight its brands&#8217; internal-combustion prowess, Campbell says that EVs will benefit from the high-level aerodynamic engineering that racing demands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cIn racing right now, the tools we use to prepare a race car \u2014 whether aero analysis, driver simulation, wind tunnel activity \u2014 all those principles and tools we\u2019ve honed to the way we prepare for electrification,\u201d he said. \u201cWe apply those tools to make the best aerodynamics and cooling decisions for EVs of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><em>Henry Payne is auto critic for The Detroit News.
