It has shut down racing for weeks and forced\u00a0a rework of the schedule\u00a0\u2014\u00a0including the Indy 500 that was moved to this weekend&#8217;s Aug.\u00a023\u00a0date from its traditional Memorial Day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI think 2020 has been an incredibly difficult year for everyone,\u201d said &#8220;The Captain,&#8221; as he is affectionately called, in an interview this week ahead of the big race. \u201cCertainly, no one could have envisioned the challenges we have all faced this year. A passion seeded\u00a0as a young teen growing up in Shaker Heights on the east side of Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cMy love for racing really began at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway when my father took me to see my first Indianapolis 500 in 1951,\u201d Penske said. \u201cSince then, it was always a goal of mine to return to race at Indianapolis and, of course, competing at the Indianapolis 500 was the pinnacle of racing \u2014\u00a0and it still is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">He was an amateur\u00a0Sports Car Club of America racer in the early 1960s. Quick in sports cars, he earned Driver of the Year honors in 1961 and caught the eye of pro series like Formula One and NASCAR. Our success on the track \u2014\u00a0especially at the Indianapolis 500 \u2014\u00a0has really helped build awareness of our brand,&#8221;\u00a0he said. \u201cBut beyond that, the lessons we have learned and the philosophies that have brought us success in racing have been directly applied to all areas of our business: teamwork, technology, perseverance\u00a0and focus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">A key partner is his early team endeavors was Mark Donohue \u2014\u00a0nickname, Captain Nice\u00a0\u2014\u00a0a rare racing talent\u00a0who also was a skilled engineer.\u00a0Their success began in sports cars, then Trans Am Camaros \u2014\u00a0an SCCA class that Team Penske would\u00a0dominate in the late 1960s. But their eyes were set on bigger fish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cThe Indianapolis 500 was the pinnacle of racing. We worked with our sponsors to put together a program for the 1969 Indianapolis 500 with Mark,\u201d remembers Penske. Success was immediate.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"gnt_atomsnc\" class=\"gnt_em gnt_em_anc\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"loadAnc\" aria-label=\"Newsletter signup form\"><\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Donohue finished seventh, winning\u00a0Indy 500 Rookie of the Year honors. Just three years later, he stood atop the podium \u2014\u00a0the first of Penske\u2019s 18 Indy wins. Penske started racing in NASCAR and the\u00a0globetrotting Formula One series in the mid-1970s,\u00a0an\u00a0endeavor that cost Donohue his\u00a0life in a tragic 1975 accident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The Captain&#8217;s biggest successes have come at Indy. He knows names and family details of\u00a0team members right down to workers on shop floors. He attends every IndyCar race and\u00a0serves as a driver race strategy manager.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The racers worship him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">\u201cI&#8217;m very proud to know Roger, quite frankly. I think he&#8217;s\u00a0a monument of racing \u2014 a monument of business in general,&#8221;\u00a0Frenchman and 2019 Indy 500 winner Simon Pagenaud said. &#8220;I want to make him proud by winning.\u00a0Frankly, I would like to be the driver to win his first Indy 500 as an\u00a0owner of the speedway.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Penske&#8217;s influence transcends his team. His efficient\u00a0management style \u2014\u00a0even his white shirt and slacks dress code \u2014\u00a0is emulated up and down pit row.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">&#8220;In the paddock, no one\u00a0is more respected,&#8221; said former Car and Driver executive editor Steven Cole Smith, who covers motor racing for Autoweek and Grassroots\u00a0Motorsports. &#8220;But interestingly, those who work for him don&#8217;t call him Mr. Penske. They call him Roger.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The Indy 500 has changed dramatically over the years. Speeds have climbed from an average lap speed of 150 mph in the 1960s to over 230 mph this year. Levitt, LAT Images\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The racing world heralded\u00a0<a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/2019\/11\/04\/michigans-roger-penske-buys-indianapolis-motor-speedway-indycar\/40542525\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">a bold new era with Penske&#8217;s purchase<\/a>\u00a0of the Indy 500 and IndyCar from the Hulman\u00a0family late last year. But the new boss couldn&#8217;t have\u00a0had an inkling of what was to come.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The pandemic crippled the early 2020 racing season. May races at Indy and Detroit fell in quick succession, with the season not getting underway until June. The Indy 500 was rescheduled until late August, which seemed a safe bet at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">The season gained momentum as Wisconsin&#8217;s Elkhart Lake road course welcomed the return of thousands of fans\u00a0to motorsport in July.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But a surge in national cases panicked officials, leading to the postponement of IndyCar&#8217;s Mid-Ohio race until October. Bad news for Sunday&#8217;s\u00a0500 inevitably followed: no spectators would be allowed for the &#8220;Greatest Spectacle in Racing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Penske reacted with his trademark\u00a0optimism:\u00a0\u201cThe most important thing is we have found a way to keep moving forward. I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish together, and while this year\u2019s Indianapolis 500 will certainly be different without fans in attendance, we are looking forward to putting on a great show for everyone watching on NBC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Says Cole Smith: &#8220;There is no better steward to pull IndyCar and IMS\u00a0through this pandemic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">Dealing with fast-changing health conditions hasn\u2019t been Penske&#8217;s only Indy 500 challenge. It&#8217;s the first time that&#8217;s happened since 2002. Instead, Penske&#8217;s\u00a0Honda-powered rivals\u00a0dominated\u00a0qualifying, with Newgarden the first Penske car on the 33-car grid in\u00a013th.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">But The Captain is not one to dwell on the past. Of past Indy winners, he confesses no single favorite. All carry special moments, he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\">His focus now is on Sunday, the next race.
