On fully autonomous\u00a0Level 4-5 vehicles, they have\u00a0diverged:\u00a0Tesla is\u00a0pursuing a future which\u00a0owners would be able to share their cars\u00a0as part of a broader robotaxi fleet called the Tesla Network. Martin \/ Cadillac)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/aside>\n<div class=\"clearfix\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">On the passenger-car side, GM\u2019s Super Cruise and Tesla\u2019s Navigate on Autopilot are \u201cgeo-fenced\u201d systems designed for hands-free driving as long as vehicles are on divided, limited-access highways such as interstates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">First introduced on the Cadillac CT6 sedan in 2017, Super Cruise uses a more comprehensive suite of hardware \u2014 including lidar along with infrared sensors to monitor driver attention\u00a0\u2014 to navigate and\u00a0automatically\u00a0change lanes.\u00a0Tesla&#8217;s camera-and-radar-based system offers similar capability, but also allows self-driving on secondary roads.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ad-position-59\" class=\"partner-placement partner-spike partner-placement-visible\" data-ad-placement=\"native-article_link\" data-ad-sizes=\"[&quot;fluid&quot;,[3,3], [2,6], [300,250]]\" data-monetization-id=\"native-article_link\" data-monetization-sizes=\"fluid,300,250,3,3,2,6\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Parks says Ultra Cruise \u2014\u00a0an internal GM name for now \u2014 aims to expand Super Cruise&#8217;s highway autonomy to all roads.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cSuper Cruise is about all highways all the time and increased capability. The downside is when you get off the (highway) you don\u2019t have it,\u201d Park told the symposium. \u201cWhat Ultra Cruise (is) trying to do is take that same capability off the highway. So Ultra Cruise would be all the Super Cruise plus neighborhoods, cities, subdivisions. We\u2019re not saying Ultra Cruise will be fully autonomous 100% of the time, although that could be one of the end games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Tesla&#8217;s pioneering Autopilot system, available on all its vehicles,\u00a0recently received an over-the-air update that automatically stops\u00a0for red lights and stop signs. The system, however, requires constant attention\u00a0by the driver. The Origin was shown during a reveal event in January in San Francisco.\u00a0<span class=\"credit\">(Photo: Sam Abuelsamid, Guidehouse Insight)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/aside>\n<div class=\"clearfix\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cGM\u00a0will do a lot more development before delivery,\u201d said Abuelsamid. \u201cGM has targeted 2023 when their systems can work in conjunction\u00a0with, say, city V2X infrastructure where cars\u00a0communicates with roadside sensors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Parks said it&#8217;s important to keep costs down on passenger cars. \u201cWe\u2019re focused on how can we give drivers additional capability above and beyond the highway at a priceable level. How can we continue to add self-assist capability to people&#8217;s cars without tens of thousands of dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">GM sees\u00a0more expensive equipment like lidar as essential for Origin, the bread-loaf shaped people mover\u00a0that GM\u2019s Cruise division introduced in San Francisco\u00a0this January. Will everyone want to be\u00a0packed in one of those? Maybe, maybe not,\u201d said the GM executive. \u201cSo we\u2019re still happy to take one or two people in the vehicle, so maybe it\u2019s not completely\u00a0packed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">But he said\u00a0other opportunities might open like package delivery, a service that Origin\u00a0(and other vehicles like Rivian\u00a0trucks under contract with Amazon) was also designed for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cYou could almost argue on the other side of COVID, there\u00a0is more package delivery, not less.
