{"id":25276,"date":"2020-04-30T11:35:54","date_gmt":"2020-04-30T15:35:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/henrypayne.com\/?p=25276"},"modified":"2020-04-30T11:35:54","modified_gmt":"2020-04-30T15:35:54","slug":"rochester-hills-prefix-corp-retools-from-race-engines-to-face-shields","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/henrypayne.com\/index.php\/2020\/04\/rochester-hills-prefix-corp-retools-from-race-engines-to-face-shields","title":{"rendered":"Rochester Hills&#8217; Prefix Corp. retools from race engines to face shields"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"speakable-p-1 p-text\">Before the COVID-19 crisis, Rochester Hills-based Prefix Corp. was looking forward to making race engines this spring for the Detroit Grand Prix Trans Am support races.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-2 p-text\">Instead, it\u2019s making medical devices for first responders, hospitals and\u00a0other businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The 40-year-old firm is evidence that America&#8217;s\u00a0massive &#8220;Arsenal\u00a0of Health&#8221; mobilization to fight World War C has swept up Metro Detroit firms big and small.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/general-motors\/2020\/04\/17\/first-ventilators-built-general-motors-arrive-chicago-hospitals\/5152035002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">In addition to automotive giants\u00a0like General Motors Co. and Ford<\/a>\u00a0Motor Co., pandemic demand has\u00a0transformed Prefix&#8217;s\u00a0plants in Rochester Hills\u00a0and Auburn\u00a0Hills from making\u00a0engines and auto prototypes into\u00a0assembly lines for face shields and face masks. So when the world changed rapidly as this COVID-19 issue happened, we had people within the organization that said, \u2018Hey, I\u2019m not going home. What can we do to make a difference?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Innovation and quick turnarounds for years have made Prefix a go-to company for\u00a0automakers and performance customers. In Mexico, Volkswagen has partnered with\u00a0supplier Faurecia to\u00a0produce hundreds of masks and gowns for hard-hit communities like New York City.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/2020\/04\/06\/global-arsenal-health-fights-common-covid-enemy\/5111200002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">And in England, Mercedes-Benz&#8217;s high-performance AMG division is delivering<\/a>\u00a0CPAP devices to British patients.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ad-position-61\" class=\"partner-placement partner-spike ad-gray-border ad-notice ad-paramount-inline partner-placement-visible\" data-ad-placement=\"native-article_link\" data-ad-sizes=\"[&quot;fluid&quot;,[3,3], [2,6]]\" data-monetization-id=\"native-article_link\" data-monetization-sizes=\"fluid,3,3,2,6\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Prefix may not be a household name to consumers. But\u00a0Prefix\u2019s big Auburn Hills paint facility\u00a0paints the Ford GT supercar. Before Dodge discontinued\u00a0its Dodge Viper, the Prefix plant painted it\u00a0as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">So speedy has the Arsenal of Health\u00a0been in ramping up a mass medical device production that Prefix has struggled to find needed\u00a0materials. With deliveries by April 25 topping 90,000, the company has been ordering thousands of pounds of plastics and other materials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s starting to get tough to get certain materials,\u201d said Dolphin. \u201cElastic, for example, has become somewhat scarce. It\u2019s cool to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Working on the lines has been a voluntary decision.\u00a0Prefix has made sure its work spaces are\u00a0safe. Task have been spread\u00a0across its four\u00a0facilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201c(We\u2019ve) been able to set up small production facilities and make sure the distancing and\u00a0cleanliness is kept,\u201d said Dolphin. \u201cPeople are showing up with ambulances and we\u2019re filling them with face shields so they can be delivered around the area.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Prefix is disappointed that the Detroit Grand\u00a0Prix has been canceled for 2020. This year the Trans Am series was set to play a significant supporting\u00a0role to the IndyCar main event\u00a0\u2013 both with professional TA2 races as well as vintage races featuring Trans Am classics driven\u00a0by legends like Lyn St. James.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">In addition to providing\u00a0the engines for the Chevy, Ford\u00a0and Dodge muscle cars in the TA2 field, Prefix sponsors the No. 40 Dodge Challenger that won the TA2 title last year with Michigan racer Mark Miller behind the wheel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201c(It\u2019s) a punch in the gut that we can\u2019t do that this year. Being involved with Trans Am has been a big source of pride for us,\u201d said Doplhin. \u201cA lot of us are racers at Prefix. We are big fans of go-fast machines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Suiting its quick-turn\u00a0prototyping\u00a0ability, Prefix has expanded its performance division to so-called restomods:\u00a0classic cars gutted and updated with modern technology and engines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Some of that work continues as Prefix engineers work from home. But the same processes \u2014\u00a0tooling, stamping, water-jet cutting, CAD computers, 3D printing \u2014 necessary to build the wheels, interiors and electronics for, say, a\u00a0concept car\u00a0are now suited to staying open as an essential business making medical equipment and foot pulls for doors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">As Prefix&#8217;s regular\u00a0clients reopen across the country, Dolphin said everybody is\u00a0ready to get back to its usual work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;It\u2019s obviously going to take some time,&#8221; he said.\u00a0&#8220;I have every bit of confidence that it will come back strong.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before the COVID-19 crisis, Rochester Hills-based Prefix Corp. was looking forward to making race engines this spring for the Detroit Grand Prix Trans Am support races.
