Appropriately, the mega-utes were unveiled in Little Caesars Arena, where giant Detroit Pistons basketball players roam the floorboards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-2 p-text\">Based on the Silverado pickup, the twin SUVs have traditionally been the biggest in the land. Combined with magnetic\u00a0shocks and air suspension available on the off-road Z51 and High Country trims, the Tahoe-Suburban offer an astonishing range of on-road and off-road capability.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;With\u00a0the air suspension you can actually lower the truck for people to get in, or you can raise it to go off-road in the snow,&#8221; GM President Mark Reuss said in an interview. &#8220;But then at speed the truck will lower for better aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. We are were the only ones doing that with MagneRide and air suspension.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"ad-position-66\" class=\"partner-placement partner-spike partner-placement-visible\" data-ad-placement=\"native-article_link\" data-ad-sizes=\"[&quot;fluid&quot;,[3,3], [2,6]]\" data-monetization-id=\"native-article_link\" data-monetization-sizes=\"fluid,3,3,2,6\">On stage at Little Caesars, Chevy displayed the range of suspension options with a jacked-up Z51 Tahoe and lowered High Country.<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Responding to the equally out-sized Ford Expedition (new in 2018), the Suburban and Tahoe have gone on a 300-pound diet from their\u00a0predecessors. But the shorter, more affordable Tahoe has been the best-seller, dominating its full-size SUV class sales.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Based on platforms shared with GM\u2019s high-volume Chevy and GMC pickups, the big SUVs are cash cows with prices starting in the low $50,000 range and ballooning to over $80,000\u00a0for upper-trim models. They pay tuition for a lot of the General\u2019s nascent electric-vehicle education.\u00a0The Suburban and Tahoe will go on sale in the middle of the 2020 season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Tahoe led the way in large SUVs\u00a0in last year in sales of more than 104,000. The\u00a0Suburban followed\u00a0at 60,633 and the Expedition was a distant third at 54,661. Among foreign brands, only Nissan (the Armada) and Toyota (the Sequoia) try to compete, but with much smaller sales numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">This year is a different story: Remade with a twin-turbo V-6 and upgraded technology, the Expedition\u00a0\u2013 based on the F-150 pickup\u00a0\u2014 has come roaring back through the first three quarters of 2019. The new chassis allows for lower load floors for batter cargo and seating position. The second-row seats, for example, gain a whopping 10 inches in added legroom with segment-first sliding second-row seats for even more flexibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cWith an increasing number of SUVs on the market, we knew the all-new Tahoe and Suburban needed to reach higher than ever,\u201d said product chief Tim Herrick. \u201cWe transformed Tahoe and Suburban to offer all-new technologies and features.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">While both vehicles gain over 4 inches in wheelbase, the Tahoe\u2019s overall length stretches a yawning 6.7 inches to claim 25% more cargo space than the Expedition.<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-SUUF2jGYlCg\" class=\"story-asset image-asset\">\n<aside class=\"wide single-photo\"><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/12\/11\/PDTN\/42873f04-e99b-4075-b961-0ac36992b66f-121019-tm-Chevy_Suburban0145.jpg?width=540&amp;height=&amp;fit=bounds&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"The Chevy Tahoe Z71, like its sister Suburban, seats eight.\" width=\"540\" data-mycapture-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/12\/11\/PDTN\/42873f04-e99b-4075-b961-0ac36992b66f-121019-tm-Chevy_Suburban0145.jpg\" data-mycapture-sm-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/12\/11\/PDTN\/42873f04-e99b-4075-b961-0ac36992b66f-121019-tm-Chevy_Suburban0145.jpg\" \/>The Chevy Tahoe Z71, like its sister Suburban, seats eight.\u00a0<span class=\"credit\">(Photo: Todd McInturf, The Detroit News)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/aside>\n<div class=\"clearfix\">These big beasts are motivated by familiar\u00a0push-rod V-8 engines \u2014 a standard 5.3-liter dynoed at\u00a0355 horses, and a 6.2-liter\u00a0boasting best-in-class 420 horsepower.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The eight-cylinders\u00a0will be joined for the first time by the class\u2019s only turbodiesel:\u00a0the same Duramax 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder offered in the Silverado 1500. Chevy expects it will receive an EPA best-in-segment mpg rating (Silverado makes a best-in-full-size-pickup 33 mpg highway). The diesel&#8217;s stump-pulling 460 pound-feet of torque equal\u00a0the 6.2-liter V-8.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The interior will bristle with technology,\u00a0including a standard\u00a010-inch console touchscreen with standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, WiFi hotspot connectivity\u00a0and up to nine cameras for enhanced towing capability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;The interior 10.8-inch screen is really nicely integrated from a design standpoint,&#8221; said Reuss. &#8220;Everyone assumed we\u2019d have the same interiors of our pickup trucks, but we don\u2019t. Between Chevy, GMC and Cadillac the interiors are all completely different. They\u00a0are different and we spent the money to be different.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Work through a record six trims \u2014\u00a0double the last generation \u2014\u00a0and a toy chest of goodies are available including a 15-inch color head-up display and dual 12.6-inch\u00a0rear-seat LCD touchscreens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">All this brain and brawn is wrapped in an\u00a0exterior that is a mild face-lift over the current version. Like the Silverado pickup, the Suburban fascia gets thinner LED headlights atop its massive split grille with signature LED running-light \u201ccheeks\u201d giving the big brute a cheery appearance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">In addition to the familiar\u00a0volume LS and up-level LT \u00a0trims, Tahoe and Suburban will be available in four more distinct personalities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>RST:<\/strong>\u00a0A sporty look like the RS grade found on the Chevy Blazer crossover with liberally applied black mascara on the grille and exterior highlights, 22-inch wheels\u00a0and contrasting seat stitching.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0Z71:<\/strong>\u00a0Chevy\u2019s signature off-road package gets knobby tires wrapped around 20-inch wheels, standard all-wheel drive, skid plates and a higher approach-angle for the Outback.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Premier:<\/strong>\u00a0The premium package is a rolling Manhattan condo with magnetic-ride shocks, navigation, Bose 10-speaker audio system, 12-way vented front seat, and enough tech to fly an airliner.<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0High Country:<\/strong>\u00a0Borrowed from Silverado, the top trim gets the 6.2-liter V-8 standard, plus the segment\u2019s first air suspension allowing for up to 4 inches of ride-height variability. Touches include expanded color choices and High Country badging, sill plates and seat embroidery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;We&#8217;re offering multiple trims, like our pickups. No one else is doing it,&#8221; said Reuss.\u00a0&#8220;RST, Z51, High Country. We\u2019re looking to grow the segment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The Tahoe and Suburban\u00a0will roll off the assembly line in Arlington, Texas, alongside the GMC Yukon and Cadillac\u00a0Escalade.
