{"id":24259,"date":"2019-10-02T16:40:40","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T20:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/henrypayne.com\/?p=24259"},"modified":"2019-10-02T16:40:40","modified_gmt":"2019-10-02T20:40:40","slug":"bollinger-introduces-motor-city-made-electric-trucks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/henrypayne.com\/index.php\/2019\/10\/bollinger-introduces-motor-city-made-electric-trucks","title":{"rendered":"Bollinger introduces Motor City-made electric trucks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/09\/26\/PDTN\/7379ddff-c0f4-48e2-a9c3-7d187364bf3c-Bollinger_B1_7_8_Front.jpg?width=520&amp;height=390&amp;fit=bounds&amp;auto=webp\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ferndale-based Bollinger Motors introduced the B1 all-electric SUV sport utility on Thursday.\u00a0<span class=\"credit\">(Photo: Bollinger Motors)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-1 p-text\"><em>Ferndale<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 Rivian isn\u2019t the only all-electric truck-maker in the Motor City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-2 p-text\">While the Plymouth-based firm has wowed auto show attendees and attracted hundreds of millions\u00a0in investment from Fortune 500 companies including Amazon and Ford, Ferndale-based Bollinger Motors\u00a0has also targeted its stylish electric trucks for production next year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Bollinger Motors debuted\u00a0its\u00a0four-door, all-electric SUV and pickup trucks in Ferndale on Thursday.\u00a0Called the B1 and B2, respectively, the big and\u00a0rugged vehicles are\u00a0targeted at off-road enthusiasts with a penchant for pricey Range Rovers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Bollinger is the brain-child of industrial designer\u00a0Robert Bollinger, who largely self-financed his effort with a fortune earned\u00a0in the cosmetics industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The inspiration for the EVs came from \u201cliving on a grass-fed farm in the Catskills in upstate New York,\u201d Bollinger said in an interview on Autoline this spring. \u201cI wanted to go back to a childhood dream of starting something\u00a0automotive. I needed a truck out of necessity, it\u2019s what I wanted to drive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">After hammering out a rough vision of his prototype on his farm \u2014 the vehicle\u2019s severe, boxy design owes itself to its founder\u2019s design aesthetic and the fact that it doesn\u2019t use\u00a0stamping dies to save development money \u2013 Bollinger introduced an early B1 prototype at Classic Car Club of Manhattan in 2017.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The response was electric and Bollinger had 28,000 hand-raisers interested in his products by mid-2019. A move to Metro Detroit soon followed so that the growing company could take advantage of Michigan\u2019s deep engineering and automotive vendor resources. Plans are to build them in Ferndale.<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-SITkbTjv7rs\" class=\"story-asset image-asset\">\n<aside class=\"wide single-photo\"><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/09\/26\/PDTN\/6dc416e5-5f1f-4cd0-80f0-5a6a63a8453b-Bollinger_B2_7_8_Front.jpg?width=540&amp;height=&amp;fit=bounds&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"The Bollinger Motors B2 electric truck  will be available only as 4-door version at first.\" width=\"540\" data-mycapture-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/09\/26\/PDTN\/6dc416e5-5f1f-4cd0-80f0-5a6a63a8453b-Bollinger_B2_7_8_Front.jpg\" data-mycapture-sm-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/09\/26\/PDTN\/6dc416e5-5f1f-4cd0-80f0-5a6a63a8453b-Bollinger_B2_7_8_Front.jpg?width=500&amp;height=374\" \/>The Bollinger Motors B2 electric truck will be available only as 4-door version at first.\u00a0<span class=\"credit\">(Photo: Bollinger Motors)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/aside>\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\u00a0With Jeep Wrangler-like dual locking-differentials, knobby tires, 15-inch ground-clearance (adjustable up to 20)\u00a0and 10-inch suspension travel, the B1 and B2 are\u00a0designed\u00a0to explore Bollinger\u2019s farm \u2013 and the limits of the outdoors.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Bollinger designed the truck electric to advantage of EVs&#8217; inherent\u00a0physical qualities\u00a0\u2013 battery in the floor, low-end torque\u00a0and electric motors driving front and rear axles \u2013 to offer\u00a0utility and hauling capability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cIt was obvious to go electric \u2013 anyone starting anything now in automotive has to be electric,\u201d Bollinger said. \u201cElectric is so much better than gas \u2013 there is pass-though (space) in the middle of the truck, lockable storage space in front, and two motors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The\u00a0interior is\u00a0open as a pass-through space. Both the front and rear ends of the vehicles have drop-down tailgates so that you can run long cargo \u2013 lumber, rolled carpet, steel beams \u2014\u00a0from one end\u00a0to the other. The B2 pickup has enough pass-through space for 16-foot-long lumber. The B1 SUV can accommodate 13-footers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The pickup will feature a 6-foot bed which is extendable to 8 feet by dropping the wall behind the rear seats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The B1 and B2 are classified as Class 3 trucks weighing between 10,000 and 14,000 pounds \u2013 the same class as a\u00a0Ford F350 Super Duty. The skin is made of aluminum, but most of the mass comes\u00a0from the\u00a0huge battery that will give the truck over 200 miles of electric range while\u00a0offering the capability to tow a claimed\u00a07,500 pounds or carry\u00a05,200 pounds of payload.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">While Rivian has already received 100,000 orders from Amazon for delivery trucks, Bollinger is focused on selling at small volume to off-road customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cWe needed to be in our little niche \u2013 and own it. The vehicles are spare both inside and outside \u2013 no big, fancy Tesla touchscreens here \u2013 with an emphasis on utility. All of the vehicles&#8217; doors and glass are removable to get close to nature.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Pricing will be announced closer to production in 2020.
