The radically new\u00a0car,\u00a0he said,\u00a0&#8220;represents\u00a0one giant leap for Corvette.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Then he rattled off numbers that made the 1,400 Corvette fans, dealers and journalists\u00a0in attendance gasp:\u00a0zero-60 mph in less than 3 seconds at a cost of less than $60,000.<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-R8-9RQKLe9A\" class=\"story-asset image-asset\">\n<aside class=\"wide single-photo\"><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/07\/19\/PDTN\/cf87d970-6a9e-49d6-bcc3-1a3fdb679f7a-2020CorvetteSingrayReveal008.jpg?width=540&amp;height=&amp;fit=bounds&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"GM President Mark Reuss introduced the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray late Thursday in Tustin, California. They are comparable to the $270,000, 640-horse, mid-engine Lamborghini Huracan costing more than\u00a0four times as much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The most anticipated car of the year, the long-rumored Corvette C8 (for eighth-generation) carries the legendary \u201cStingray\u201d badge. It looks to be a tour de force of sculpted styling\u00a0with state-of-the-art electronics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Even as the C8 relocates the engine amidships like an Italian sports car in a move to give it\u00a0more nimble handling, the car does not lose its signature\u00a0V-8. Like &#8216;Vettes of old, the engine will deliver 495 horsepower to the rear wheels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Nor does the Corvette lose its signature value-play:\u00a0supercar performance for an affordable price. Alleviating concerns that the exotic mid-engine technology would balloon the sticker price, the new C8\u00a0is priced\u00a0only a few thousand dollars above the current\u00a0C7&#8217;s $56,000 price tag.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ad-position-63\" class=\"partner-placement partner-spike ad-gray-border ad-notice ad-paramount-inline partner-placement-visible\" data-ad-placement=\"native-article_link\" data-ad-sizes=\"[&quot;fluid&quot;,[3,3], [2,6]]\" data-monetization-id=\"native-article_link\" data-monetization-sizes=\"fluid,3,3,2,6\">This is as good a value as any performance car ever,&#8221; raved Kelley Blue Book auto\u00a0analyst\u00a0Karl Brauer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Added Reeves Callaway, founder of the renowned Callaway Cars that modifies and races muscle cars: &#8220;Corvette\u00a0has cracked the code. No other automaker does better a great auto at a low price.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The mid-engine design will serve to\u00a0give better rear-weight distribution over the C8&#8217;s\u00a0rear Michelins. The car adds launch control, and there&#8217;s a\u00a0standard dual-clutch\u00a0eight-speed automatic\u00a0transmission (brace yourselves, purists: there is no manual option).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;The traditional front-engine vehicle reached its limits of performance, necessitating the new layout,\u201d said Reuss, a race-licensed motorhead who was key to pushing the revamped car. \u201cIn terms of comfort and fun, it still looks and feels like a Corvette, but drives better than any vehicle in Corvette history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The C8\u2019s design avoids\u00a0the awkward proportions that often plague mid-engine cars (the rear-heavy\u00a01990 Acura NSX and sideburn-clad Audi R8 come to mind). It bears comparison to mid-engine lookers like the Lotus Evora and Ferrari 488.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;We felt this had to be something new \u2014 beyond\u00a0\u2014 and still look Corvette,&#8221; exterior designer Kirk Bennion said.\u00a0&#8220;The new proportion is key &#8230;\u00a0with\u00a0the cockpit forward 16 inches, a whole new centerline and a faster windshield. Designers found inspiration in the F-22 fighter jet \u2014\u00a0as do Lamborghini architects \u2014\u00a0and supercar fans will note similarities like the huge\u00a0outboard front air-intakes. This is a muscular supercar\u00a0compared to exotic shapes like the McLaren 720 or Ford GT.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The interior maintains\u00a0the C7 generation\u2019s dimensions while advancing its interior and materials appointments. Wrapped in a cockpit of stitched leather, the driver grips a squared-off steering wheel\u00a0to better view the 12-inch, digital instrument display. A console touchscreen is rotated toward the pilot with a Porsche-like sleeve of control buttons down the raised center spine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The C8 will be offered with\u00a0right-hand drive for international markets. Another first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Perhaps most controversial will be the Acura-like automatic \u201ctrigger\u201d transmission. A new dual-clutch Tremec transmission should help reach that claimed\u00a0sub-3-second time (when paired with the performance Z51 package).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The eight-speed is mated to an old friend: Chevy\u2019s small-block V-8 used in everything from Camaros to pickups. But this so-called LT2 mill has a few new tricks up its sleeve. Like a Porsche Boxster\/Cayman, it will swallow a small suitcase. More cargo space is found behind the engine, which will be under hatchback glass for viewing like the crown jewels at the Tower of London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">True to Corvette tradition, the boot will fit two golf bags. Together, frunk and\u00a0trunk offer 12.6 cubic feet of cargo volume, down from 15 cubic feet\u00a0in the C7 hatch. Six high-strength beams (Juechter calls them the &#8220;Bedford Six\u201d because they are produced\u00a0at GM&#8217;s Bedford, Indiana powertrain plant)\u00a0anchor the car. A carbon-fiber bumper helps reduce weight, but overall the mid-engine car appears heavier than the outgoing C7 with a dry weight of a porky 3,366 pounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The infamous composite \u201cleaf springs\u201d are scrapped, with all four corners getting coil-over springs and short-long arm suspension.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">With the engine amidships, the driver is pushed 16 inches forward. The electronics promise Tesla-like\u00a0over-the-air updates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Other electronics at drivers\u2019 fingertips include a 1.5-inch ride lift \u2014 triggered in 2.8 seconds at speeds up to 24 mph \u2014\u00a0to better navigate bumpy Detroit streets. Next to the trigger transmision are the traditional\u00a0Weather, Tour, Sport and Track drive-modes, plus configurable MyMode and Z modes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Chevy says there are 12 exterior hues like Torch Red, Arctic White and Sebring Orange \u2014 plus three newbies: Rapid Blue, Zeus Bronze\u00a0and Accelerate Yellow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Seats come in three styles:\u00a0GT1, GT2, and heavily bolstered Competition. They can be optioned in color themes from Jet Black to Morello Red.
