Except for BMW, the luxury crowd is well-represented at the New York auto show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-2 p-text\">Despite that, Detroit automakers steal Gotham&#8217;s\u00a0show. There\u2019s the Jeep Gladiator pickup, and its off-road experience outside Javits Convention Center that will have the public lining up from Hell\u2019s Kitchen to Brooklyn. And an electric pickup from Plymouth-based Rivian. And the ferocious Ford Mustang GT500.<\/p>\n<p>A variety of vehicles also make their debuts in New York. Here are my favorites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><strong>Koenigsegg Jesko<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 New York features high-end toys like no other North American show. This year the show attracted such curiosities as the BAC Mono (a single-seat rocketship) and the $2 million Karlmann King (Batmobile meets SUV), but my favorite came from Sweden\u2019s hypercar maker. With a claimed top speed of 300 mph, the Jesko eclipses its 278-mph Agera predecessor as the fastest car in the world. Interior room may be best-in-class, but the CT5\u00a0still has plenty of hustle from your option of two turbocharged engines. And boy, does thing look good. Located just down the hall from the Porsche Macan from which it takes design cues, it\u2019s sleek and sporty. That magic continues inside with electronic tricks like one-button-activated self-park assist. The Lincoln Corsair \u2014\u00a0based on the same roomy platform \u2014 also debuted at this show, but I\u2019m not sure it\u2019s worth $15,000\u00a0over the sophisticated Escape.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/04\/18\/PDTN\/ed035fa1-1753-4029-9fef-a2d6f87bb6af-hyundai_Sonata.JPG?width=520&amp;height=390&amp;fit=bounds&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Hyundai Sonata, on display at the 2019 New York Auto Show.\" \/><br \/>\n<\/div><strong>Hyundai Sonata\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Welcome back, Sonata. After a detour to Vanilla Town with its last-generation\u00a0sedan, the Sonata is back with a head-turner. The design features such innovations as LED running lights along the hood \u2013 and a seamless hood over a rimless grille, usually associated with Aston Martin. Rescuing the throaty 330-horse, 2.3 liter turbo-4 from the Focus RS hot hatch, the Mustang saves 150 pounds up front compared to a V-8 \u2019Stang. That\u2019ll make it a treat at weekend autocrosses and Waterford Hills track days.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/04\/17\/PDTN\/56a0666f-f899-4818-b5fd-0d6c0068e34f-AP19107624470060.jpg?crop=9090,6060,x0,y0&amp;width=520&amp;height=390&amp;fit=bounds&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"The 2020 Porsche 911 Speedster Heritage Edition is shown at the New York Auto Show.\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div><p class=\"p-text\"><strong>Porsche 911 Speedster<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The special-edition Speedster says<em>\u00a0auf wiedersehen<\/em>\u00a0to the current-generation 911. It doesn\u2019t come cheap at $275,750, but in return you own one of 1,948 copies (Porsche\u2019s founding year) and\u00a0unique deck \u201cstreamers\u201d behind the front seats like the 1950s classics. In the boot is a loud, naturally aspirated flat-6 that also sounds like the good ol\u2019 days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><strong><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/04\/18\/PDTN\/f2b1cee6-3b4a-4d24-babb-59a093afc52b-subaru_fr.JPG?width=520&amp;height=390&amp;fit=bounds&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Subaru Outback at the 2019 New York Auto Show.\" \/>Subaru Outback<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 To introduce the latest version of its iconic crossover, Subaru built a spectacular floor display that transports visitors to an outdoor national park. A mainstay of the Subie lineup with station-wagon utility and all-wheel drive, the Outback sits on a new platform which brings new goodies like a big Tesla-like console screen and a torquey turbo-4 that replaces the\u00a0reliable flat-6.<\/p>\n<\/div><div id=\"module-position-Run9ZOP6bok\" class=\"story-asset image-asset\"><\/div>\n<p><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/04\/18\/PDTN\/2b76fc8b-4bba-48e3-80d3-34de3907af35-mercedes.JPG?width=520&amp;height=390&amp;fit=bounds&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"Mercedes GLS at the 2019 New York Auto Show.\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div><p><strong>Mercedes GLS<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Mercedes showed its first electric vehicle, the EQC, in New York. But it was overshadowed\u00a0\u2014\u00a0literally \u2014\u00a0\u00a0by the hulking GLS three-row SUV, which is where the money is made. The GLS has all the expected Mercedes touches: heated rear seats, voice-recognition controls. But my favorite feature is Carwash mode which closes the big ute tight as a turtle, then raises it up high for maximum fender-well cleaning.<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-Run9ZOP6bok\" class=\"story-asset image-asset\">\n<aside class=\"wide single-photo\"><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/04\/18\/PDTN\/95955068-de5e-4db8-adc5-bf43324f2025-Tarok_Concept-Large-9696.jpg?crop=2481,1335,x595,y135&amp;width=540&amp;height=&amp;fit=bounds&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"The VW Tarok pickup concept\" width=\"540\" data-mycapture-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/04\/18\/PDTN\/95955068-de5e-4db8-adc5-bf43324f2025-Tarok_Concept-Large-9696.jpg\" data-mycapture-sm-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/04\/18\/PDTN\/95955068-de5e-4db8-adc5-bf43324f2025-Tarok_Concept-Large-9696.jpg?width=500&amp;height=263\" \/><strong>VW Tarok<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 V-dub\u2019s second small pickup concept in two years is handsome, innovative&#8230;\u00a0and built on a unibody chassis. Unibodies have struggled in the U.S. market (see the Honda Ridgeline) against ladder-framed bullies from Chevy and Toyota, but VW sees daylight for an affordable micro-truck. The pickup bed can be expanded by dropping the back wall. VW might think of expanding engine options beyond the mousy, 1.4-liter 4, too.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"module-position-Run9ZOPmNbc\" class=\"story-asset image-asset\">\n<aside class=\"wide single-photo\"><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/04\/18\/PDTN\/eb05539a-018f-4d2f-af9f-068a52e44954-Qiantu_K50.jpg?crop=1019,503,x75,y26&amp;width=540&amp;height=&amp;fit=bounds&amp;auto=webp\" alt=\"The Qiantu K50\" width=\"540\" data-mycapture-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/04\/18\/PDTN\/eb05539a-018f-4d2f-af9f-068a52e44954-Qiantu_K50.jpg\" data-mycapture-sm-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/presto\/2019\/04\/18\/PDTN\/eb05539a-018f-4d2f-af9f-068a52e44954-Qiantu_K50.jpg?width=500&amp;height=241\" \/><strong>Qiantu K50<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Looks like a concept, but it&#8217;s not\u00a0a concept. The striking electric sports car from China is due to hit U.S.\u00a0shores late next year. Production is slated for the U.S. With low center of gravity, instant torque and all-wheel drive, the supercar will be quick.
