{"id":22642,"date":"2018-08-01T17:51:26","date_gmt":"2018-08-01T21:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/henrypayne.com\/?p=22642"},"modified":"2018-08-01T17:51:26","modified_gmt":"2018-08-01T21:51:26","slug":"sergio-marchionne-former-fiat-chrysler-ceo-has-died","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/henrypayne.com\/index.php\/2018\/08\/sergio-marchionne-former-fiat-chrysler-ceo-has-died","title":{"rendered":"Sergio Marchionne, former Fiat Chrysler CEO, has died"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/9408290c20734fbe084cbd5c1dc9a858ff0fa229\/c=0-0-2169-1631\/local\/-\/media\/2017\/08\/16\/DetroitNews\/B99565245Z.1_20170816083224_000_GLR1JU999.1-0.jpg?width=534&amp;height=401&amp;fit=crop\" alt=\"2016 323614378-TDNBrd_DETROIT_11-25-2016_TDNXX_1_A003~~2016~11~24~IMG_-08261.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-1 p-text\"><strong>Sergio Marchionne, 1952-2018\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-2 p-text\">Sergio Marchionne, the founding CEO of\u00a0Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV who died Wednesday<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>at age 66, will be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/chrysler\/2018\/07\/25\/leaders-mourn-loss-fcas-marchionne\/832543002\/\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">remembered as one of the auto industry&#8217;s\u00a0transformational figures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">An automotive outsider groomed as an accountant and financial officer, Marchionne engineered the merger of Fiat and Chrysler in 2009.\u00a0By the time he\u00a0was\u00a0replaced as CEO by Jeep chief Mike Manley at\u00a0a hastily called board meeting Saturday, Marchionne had revived the fortunes of both companies as a growing,\u00a0international conglomerate encompassing 10\u00a0brands under the corporate umbrella of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;His unbelievable turnaround left Fiat so much healthier than when he found it,&#8221; said Jeremy Acevedo, manager of industry analysis for Edmunds. &#8220;He&#8217;ll be remembered as one of the early 21st-century&#8217;s great auto leaders along with Alan Mulally and Elon Musk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Exor SpA, the holding company of Fiat&#8217;s founding Agnelli family, confirmed Marchionne&#8217;s death\u00a0in a statement. It attributed his passing in Zurich, where he kept a home, to\u00a0complications from surgery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cUnfortunately what we feared has come to pass,\u201d said John Elkann, a Fiat heir. \u201cSergio Marchionne, man and friend, is gone.\u00a0I believe that the best way to honor his memory is to build on the legacy he left us, continuing to develop the human values of responsibility and openness of which he was the most ardent champion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Industry leaders and politicians offered condolences. Bill Ford, executive chairman of\u00a0Ford Motor Co., said\u00a0Marchionne was an admired industry leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cSergio Marchionne was one of the most respected leaders in the industry whose creativity and bold determination helped to restore Chrysler to financial health and grow Fiat Chrysler into a profitable global automaker,&#8221; he said in a statement. &#8220;His extraordinary leadership, candor and passion for the industry will be missed by everyone who knew him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"partner-outstream\">\u00a0Noted for a minimalist wardrobe that seemed limited to a closet full of black sweaters, Marchionne was as colorful as his sartorial taste was monochromatic.<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;He was well-known for his business prowess as well as his disdain for suits and neckties,&#8221; says Rebecca Lindland, senior auto analyst at Kelley Blue Book.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Never shy with a quip, the profane, funny, driven CEO\u00a0bucked industry trends and questioned industry traditions. He\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/fiat-chrysler-ceo-sergio-marchionne-on-fiat-500e-ev-dont-buy-it\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">famously said of the Fiat 500e<\/a>, a poor-selling\u00a0electric vehicle\u00a0sold in California to meet the state&#8217;s zero-emission mandates: \u201cI hope you don\u2019t buy it, because every time I sell one it costs me $14,000. No competitor took him up on the offer.<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-RDXKNFT3qHE\" class=\"story-asset image-asset\">\n<aside class=\"single-photo float\">Sergio Marchionne speaks at the press conference at the FCA headquarters in Auburn Hills in this May 6, 2014 file photo.\u00a0<span class=\"credit\">(Photo: Robin Buckson, The Detroit News, file)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><b>A quick study<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Marchionne&#8217;s family crossed the Atlantic from Italy to Toronto\u00a0in 1965 when Sergio was 13 years old.\u00a0 After graduating from the\u00a0University of Toronto with a degree in philosophy, the ambitious Italian-Canadian citizen added a bachelor of commerce\u00a0degree\u00a0and MBA from the\u00a0University of Windsor, and a law degree from York University in Toronto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">He spent the 1990s working in\u00a0financial positions with a series of\u00a0international corporations, culminating in his first chief executive appointment at Swiss aluminum company Algroup in 1997. In 2002 he became CEO of Geneva&#8217;s SGS, a Forbes Fortune 2000 company that works with companies to assure products meet regulatory standards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Two years later, the Agnelli family, which holds a controlling interest in Fiat and its successor company, plucked him from Switzerland to become CEO despite Marchionne&#8217;s lack of auto industry experience. He would prove a quick study and a shrewd judge of talent.<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-RDXKNFSheH4\" class=\"story-asset image-asset\">\n<div class=\"clearfix\">Ironically, given his obsession with a GM-Fiat Chrysler merger 10 years later, one of Marchionne&#8217;s first acts at the Italian automaker was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/02\/14\/business\/worldbusiness\/gm-will-pay-2-billion-to-sever-ties-to-fiat.html\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">to quit a troubled partnership\u00a0<\/a>with GM in Europe. The divorce won Fiat $2 billion in needed cash from Detroit&#8217;s No. 1 automaker.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">But Marchionne&#8217;s signature move was acquiring crippled Chrysler Group LLC out of bankruptcy in 2009 for no cash down and commitments to the U.S. government to meet a series of sales,\u00a0engineering and technology goals in return for a controlling interest in the Auburn Hills company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Key to that promise was bringing Fiat&#8217;s know-how to develop a 40-mpg vehicle for Chrysler. Marchionne\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1070375_why-the-2013-dodge-dart-sedan-has-to-get-40-mpg-highway\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">accomplished the feat with the fuel-efficient\u00a02013 Dodge Dart<\/a>. But Marchionne had his eyes on a bigger prize: unlocking the international potential of Chrysler&#8217;s Jeep brand at a time when consumers were moving toward\u00a0SUVs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;He saw the pendulum swinging away\u00a0from cars and towards SUVs,&#8221; says Edmunds&#8217; Acevedo, who notes that Maserati and Alfa Romeo also expanded their SUV offerings under Sergio&#8217;s watch. &#8220;He had the grit to make the hard decisions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">By 2014\u00a0Jeep&#8217;s international sales\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/chrysler\/2014\/10\/05\/jeep-sales-expected-top-milllion\/16789145\/\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">crested 1 million for the first time<\/a>\u00a0under the leadership of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/chrysler\/2018\/07\/21\/mike-manley-new-fiat-chrysler-chief-profile\/812292002\/\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">Mike\u00a0Manley, who Marchionne had brought in<\/a>\u00a0to run the off-road brand and who\u00a0ultimately succeeded an ailing Sergio as CEO on July 21. By 2016, Jeep\u00a0sales were 1.4 million globally,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/opinion\/columnists\/henry-payne\/2017\/12\/08\/fiat-chrysler-remakes-jeep-sales-leader\/108450388\/\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">increasing\u00a0four-fold<\/a>\u00a0in the U.S.\u00a0alone over 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Also upon assuming control of Chrysler, Marchionne\u00a0spun off Ram from Dodge as a stand-alone truck brand, remade Dodge as a performance icon\u00a0and\u00a0re-introduced Alfa Romeo to the U.S.\u00a0as a luxury automaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;He understood the legacy of a brand like Jeep, but at the same time he could bring back an old brand like Alfa,&#8221; says KBB&#8217;s Lindland. &#8220;He had the discipline of an accountant and the creativity of an entrepreneur.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-RDXKNFSTF90\" class=\"story-asset video-asset\">\n<div class=\"ui-video-wrapper \">\n<div class=\"ui-video-controls story-video inline-story-video\">\n<p class=\"video-desc\">In this 2012 video, FCA&#8217;s Sergio Marchionne talks about the American character, while other CEOs name the traits they see and admire in him.\u00a0<span class=\"credit\">Ankur Dholakia, The Detroit News<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\n<p class=\"p-text\"><b>Legal trouble<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Marchionne\u2019s tenure was not, however,\u00a0untouched by trouble.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Seven people have pleaded guilty in a widening corruption scandal involving Fiat Chrysler, the United Auto Workers and their joint-training center, funded by the automaker. Federal prosecutors describe a pattern of company officials funneling illegal payments to UAW leaders through training center accounts. The case already has ensnared former Fiat Chrysler executive Alphons Iacobelli and Monica-Morgan Holiefield, widow of former UAW Vice President General Holiefield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Federal prosecutors say the automaker conspired with the UAW from before 2009 through 2015 to violate the Labor Management Relations Act. The law prohibits employers or those working for them from paying, lending or delivering money or other valuables to officers or employees of labor organizations \u2014 and from labor leaders from accepting such items. Prosecutors allege that Iacobelli and at least four other unnamed Fiat Chrysler officials were funneling more than $1.5 million worth of illegal payments to UAW officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Marchionne was questioned during a private meeting in July 2016 with the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office in Detroit, sources familiar with the investigation said. He was escorted to the meeting by his white-collar criminal-defense lawyer. Marchionne had not been charged with a crime during the ongoing federal grand jury investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The automaker also faced allegations it cheated on pollution testing for diesel engines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">In May 2017,\u00a0Fiat Chrysler said it would modify around 104,000 diesel vehicles after the Justice Department sued the the automaker,\u00a0accusing it of illegally using software in diesel-powered Jeep Grand Cherokees and Ram 1500 pickups\u00a0sold since 2014 to mask true pollution levels during testing. Court filings in May 2018 cited emails that diesel engine subsidiary VM Motori knew as early as 2010 that an auxiliary emissions control device would be illegal if concealed from regulators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><strong>Bold vision, detailed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Marchionne&#8217;s bold plans were laid out in public\u00a0five-year plans beginning in 2010 with the CEO and his\u00a0team telegraphing their product moves in the normally secretive auto industry. The ambitious plans sometimes\u00a0fell\u00a0short, yet Marchionne would reboot five years later with another five-year salvo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;He was a very plain-spoken person,&#8221; says Lindland. &#8220;He was a risk-taker but also able to motivate his team to take those risks with him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Fiat Chrysler\u00a0got an infusion of cash by spinning off Ferrari in 2015 in an initial public offering\u00a0valued at over $12 billion. With its 9-percent stake in the prancing horse, Chrysler made off with nearly $1 billion.
