{"id":22640,"date":"2018-08-01T17:47:56","date_gmt":"2018-08-01T21:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/henrypayne.com\/?p=22640"},"modified":"2018-08-01T17:47:56","modified_gmt":"2018-08-01T21:47:56","slug":"under-new-chief-fiat-chrysler-future-still-more-jeeps-ram-trucks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/henrypayne.com\/index.php\/2018\/08\/under-new-chief-fiat-chrysler-future-still-more-jeeps-ram-trucks","title":{"rendered":"Under new chief, Fiat Chrysler future still more Jeeps, Ram trucks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/68ce754819cb98a6c7d31c551c3119df8fc6265d\/c=317-0-7369-5302\/local\/-\/media\/2018\/07\/22\/DetroitNews\/DetroitNews\/636678915454638795-Manley-and-trailhawk.jpg?width=534&amp;height=401&amp;fit=crop\" alt=\"636678915454638795-Manley-and-trailhawk.jpg\" width=\"403\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-1 p-text\">The British executive who supercharged Jeep and made\u00a0the most American of brands a worldwide sales leader will rely on that experience to lead all of\u00a0Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-2 p-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/chrysler\/2018\/07\/21\/mike-manley-new-fiat-chrysler-chief-profile\/812292002\/\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">Mike Manley<\/a>\u00a0was appointed Saturday as the Italian-American automaker&#8217;s next CEO.\u00a0 Analysts \u2014 and the company&#8217;s board \u2014 say\u00a0the 54-year-old is the right man at the right time to continue longtime\u00a0CEO Sergio Marchionne&#8217;s push toward\u00a0with driving profits in an increasingly saturated and competitive SUV and truck market, and a rapidly changing global automotive industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">In an emergency meeting in Italy, the automaker&#8217;s board of directors\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/chrysler\/2018\/07\/21\/sergio-marchionne-out-fiat-chrysler-ferrari-mike-manley-replacement\/812016002\/\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">replaced the 66-year-old Marchionne,<\/a>\u00a0who led the company for 14 years but is said to be in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/chrysler\/2018\/07\/21\/fca-chairman-john-elkann-statement-sergio-marchionne\/812227002\/\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">\u00a0serious condition<\/a>\u00a0in a Swiss hospital with complications following\u00a0surgery a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Manley&#8217;s value is evidenced in the five-year plan Marchionne laid out in June: The Jeep and Ram brands are the backbone of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/chrysler\/2018\/06\/04\/sergio-marchionne-turnaround-five-year-plan\/666062002\/\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">Fiat Chrysler&#8217;s latest road map.<\/a>\u00a0The plan\u00a0relies heavily on leveraging the Jeep and Ram brands in the U.S. and around the globe by launching more high-margin SUVs and trucks. Those products are expected to fund investment in electrification and autonomous-vehicle technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The company said\u00a0Manley was being asked to follow the plan set forth by Marchionne that guides the company to 2022, when it aims to be the most profitable carmaker in the United States. It will not be without\u00a0challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;Mike Manley is a worthy replacement at FCA, but it\u2019s a huge job to not only fill Sergio\u2019s shoes, but to run many brands that are facing capricious fortunes in a variety of markets,&#8221; said Rebecca Lindland, senior analyst at Kelley Blue Book. &#8220;Manley\u2019s masterful management of Jeep and Ram\u00a0will serve him well as he moves into this huge, global role.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Jeep is promising 14\u00a0electrified vehicles in the next five years, including four battery-electric options. By 2021, every Jeep nameplate will have an electrification option. Analysts said it&#8217;s fitting that Manley would assume the helm, even under unfortunate circumstances that have Marchionne exiting the company months ahead of his planned retirement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;The success of the Jeep brand under Mike Manley and his global background make him the smart choice to be the new head of FCA,&#8221; said Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Autotrader and Kelley Blue Book.\u00a0&#8220;His international experience in growing that brand will play a key role as he applies those techniques to all of the Fiat Chrysler divisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><strong>Manley&#8217;s imprint<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Manley&#8217;s\u00a0sense of humor and often-grizzled appearance were a good fit for Fiat Chrysler\u00a0during a\u00a0casual\u00a0era in which\u00a0the CEO was known for wearing a rumpled black sweater no matter the occasion.<\/p>\n<div class=\"partner-outstream\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">But beneath the informal exterior, insiders say\u00a0Manley is a brilliant executive\u00a0focused on achieving the company&#8217;s goal of making Jeep a super-brand.\u00a0While guarded about his personal life, the laconic British-born Manley has been the public face of Jeep at auto shows and product debuts as the brand climbed\u00a0the sales charts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Manley took charge of Jeep in 2009 and\u00a0Ram in 2015.\u00a0Under his leadership,\u00a0sales of both brands surged, contrary to the anemic\u00a0sales of Fiat and Chrysler. That&#8217;s led some insiders to joke that Fiat Chrysler\u00a0should\u00a0be renamed Jeep Ram.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">From just 231,701 Jeeps sold\u00a0in the U.S.\u00a0in 2009 when Fiat took over assets of the failing Chrysler Group LLC, Jeep sales have increased four-fold as Manley transformed the off-road brand into a\u00a0full-line SUV-maker just as the market was turning to sport utilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Manley\u00a0relentlessly\u00a0focused his staff on Jeep&#8217;s core values to make sure the brand&#8217;s personality stands out in a crowded marketplace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Under Manley&#8217;s watch, Jeep re-asserted the rugged Wrangler as its iconic vehicle, and added three new models: the (reborn) Cherokee, compact Compass and subcompact Renegade. Riding the sport-utility wave, U.S. sales exploded to 926,376 by 2016\u00a0before leveling off at 828,522 last year. While not yet in the league of megabrands like Ford and Chevrolet\u00a0which sell over 2 million vehicles a year, Jeep has big ambitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">He pushed Jeep into international markets.\u00a0Worldwide Jeep sales now crest 1.4 million,\u00a0and the brand has grown from four plants in the U.S. in 2009 to 10 plants in six countries this year. The compact Jeep Compass alone is made in four countries, the subcompact Renegade in three.\u00a0Along with global titans like McDonald&#8217;s and Disney, the brand\u00a0is widely known as one America&#8217;s most iconic, with roots reaching back to World War II.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Manley, who was born in\u00a0Edenbridge, Great Britain, is expected to make his first public remarks as\u00a0CEO during the company&#8217;s\u00a0second-quarter\u00a0financial results call on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><strong>Marchionne&#8217;s health<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Company representatives have declined to go into detail about Marchionne&#8217;s medical condition but said he\u2019s not returning to work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u00a0An Italian newspaper\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilmessaggero.it\/primopiano\/cronaca\/marchionne_come_sta_condizioni_salute-3871015.html\" data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\">reported Sunday<\/a>\u00a0that Marchionne is in extremely serious condition in a Zurich hospital. Il Messaggero, a newspaper based in Rome, said his condition had\u00a0worsened and that two sons were with him, along with his partner Manuela Battezzato, who works in communications for the automaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Marchionne, a native of Italy whose family moved to Canada when he was a teenager, had been on medical leave for\u00a0several weeks.\u00a0His last public appearance was June 26, when he spoke at an event in Rome. The company said July 5 that he\u00a0was expected to require \u201ca short period of convalescence\u201d after shoulder surgery.<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-RC3MOHBrJB0\" class=\"story-asset image-asset\">\n<aside class=\"single-photo float\">Sergio Marchionne speaks at the press conference at the FCA headquarters in Auburn Hills in this May 6, 2014 file photo.\u00a0<span class=\"credit\">(Photo: Robin Buckson, The Detroit News, file)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">But Fiat Chrysler Chairman John\u00a0Elkann, heir to the Agnelli family that founded Fiat, sounded a somber\u00a0tone\u00a0Saturday, saying in a statement he was\u00a0&#8220;profoundly saddened to learn of Sergio\u2019s state of health. It is a situation that was unthinkable until a few hours ago, and one that leaves us all with a real sense of injustice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Marchionne was one of the longest-serving CEOs in the auto industry, appointed in 2004 as the fifth Fiat chief in a two-year period. He managed to return the carmaker to profit in 2005 by cutting costs, laying off workers\u00a0and then looking\u00a0for a partner.\u00a0The company\u00a0had lost more than 6 billion euros ($7.04 billion)\u00a0in 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">In 2009, Marchionne managed to take\u00a0ownership of Chrysler Group LLC assets without putting up cash as it emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy under the guidance of the federal government. He pledged to\u00a0reopen factories and share\u00a0technology with the struggling U.S. carmaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">By acquiring Chrysler<b>,<\/b>\u00a0Marchionne gave Fiat the global scale it needed to survive. Still, as the world\u2019s seventh-largest automaker, the company may lack the size it needs to compete in an industry being reinvented by the emergence of autonomous driving and electrification.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">In leading a\u00a014-year turnaround, Marchionne returned the U.S. carmaker to health, revived Alfa Romeo in the United States\u00a0and pushed the company toward\u00a0slashing\u00a0net industrial debt to zero.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">He said in early June while laying out his road map for the future\u00a0that his mission there was complete, and his successor would inherit a plan already in motion to make Fiat Chrysler the most profitable automaker in the U.S. by 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">FCA plans\u00a0to deploy some $52.5 billion (45 billion euros) in capital expenditure over the next five years to achieve its 2022 goals of leveraging the highly profitable Jeep and Ram brands in the U.S. and abroad with higher-margin products that fill holes in their respective portfolios.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">In recent months, Marchionne was preparing to slow down but wanted first to complete the five-year plan to rid the carmaker of industrial debt, making it financially stronger and able to survive the next downturn. &#8220;I am a fixer,&#8221; he said.\u00a0&#8220;Until something is definitively fixed, I can\u2019t stop.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The British executive who supercharged Jeep and made\u00a0the most American of brands a worldwide sales leader will rely on that experience to lead all of\u00a0Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV.
