{"id":21845,"date":"2018-02-08T12:29:32","date_gmt":"2018-02-08T16:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/henrypayne.com\/?p=21845"},"modified":"2018-02-08T12:29:32","modified_gmt":"2018-02-08T16:29:32","slug":"fiat-500-gets-an-extra-dash-of-spice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/henrypayne.com\/index.php\/2018\/02\/fiat-500-gets-an-extra-dash-of-spice","title":{"rendered":"Fiat 500 gets an extra dash of spice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/0585c22e3fc4053f1a983aad7e7ef2ea6ef9d31b\/c=313-315-1999-1583&amp;r=x404&amp;c=534x401\/local\/-\/media\/2018\/02\/08\/DetroitNews\/B99627389Z.1_20180208012310_000_GS11RQ0LV.1-0.jpg\" alt=\"fiat-8\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div><p class=\"speakable-p-1 p-text\">The cute Fiat 500 is ditching its 4-cylinder hamster wheel and going turbo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-2 p-text\">Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced at the Chicago Auto Show today that, for 2018, its Italian meatball will be roadkill no more: Its base 101-horsepower, normally aspirated engine is being retired for a turbo-4 shared by the rest of Fiat\u2019s lineup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Gaining 33 percent more horsepower over the previous leafblower, the 135-horse 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo is a detuned version of the 160-horsepower buzzsaw in the 500\u2019s Abarth performance model.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The 500\u2019s engine is shared by the rest of Fiat\u2019s lineup which includes the Pope\u2019s favorite roomy hatchback, the 500L,; the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/opinion\/columnists\/henry-payne\/2015\/04\/22\/payne-fiat-fits-us\/26218289\/\">500X subcompact crossover<\/a>; and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/business\/autos\/chrysler\/2016\/06\/20\/payne-fiat-saved-mazdas-miata\/86161468\/\">Fiat 124 Spider sports car<\/a>. All Fiat models receive trim and feature updates for the new model year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">A mainstay in tight Italian streets since 1957, the 500 \u2013 or \u201cCinquecento\u201d in Italian \u2013 has struggled to gain traction in SUV-obsessed America\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2012\/01\/04\/144335485\/fiats-first-year-back-in-the-u-s-marred-by-missteps\">since its introduction in 2011<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">In addition to its small size, the 500 was derided for its mousy mill. The new engine comes standard on Pop and Lounge trims with the six-speed manual transmission an option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The feisty, top-trim Abarth, meanwhile, maintains its turbocharged 160 horsepower and 183 pound-feet of torque while offering sporty touches like bolstered seats, stiffened suspension, 16-inch black aluminum wheels, red brake calipers and a dual-exhaust with an obnoxious howl.<\/p>\n<div id=\"module-position-QoUStwU_g6g\" class=\"story-asset image-asset\">\n<aside class=\"wide single-photo\"><div align=\"left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/8180e0f4a1853d2e02995720ee71d7eaf35d84e5\/c=0-14-3000-2264&amp;r=x408&amp;c=540x405\/local\/-\/media\/2018\/02\/08\/DetroitNews\/B99627389Z.1_20180208012310_000_GO11RQB0N.1-0.jpg\" alt=\"fiat-3_SUB\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" data-mycapture-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/media\/2018\/02\/08\/DetroitNews\/B99627389Z.1_20180208012310_000_GO11RQB0N.1-0.jpg\" data-mycapture-sm-src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/-mm-\/399a5225fb6b2a481c4d4b53e19469a70d765849\/r=500x379\/local\/-\/media\/2018\/02\/08\/DetroitNews\/B99627389Z.1_20180208012310_000_GO11RQB0N.1-0.jpg\" \/>The 2018 Fiat 500 may be tiny, but it comes with FCA&#8217;s big-league UConnect infotainment system with smartphone connectivity.\u00a0<span class=\"credit\">(Photo: FCA US LLC)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/aside>\n<div class=\"clearfix\">\u00a0Abarth owners also get \u2013 free of charge \u2013 a one-day high-performance driving tutorial at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving in Phoenix.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The 500 lineup adds new colors for 2018 \u2013 Brillante Red, Mezzanotte Blue Pearl and Vesuvio Black Pearl \u2013 for a total of 11 paint choices. The 500 is also available in a topless \u201cCabrio\u201d body style as well as an all-electric 500e version targeted at West Coast greenies. The latter is only available in California and Oregon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Also new for 2018, the 500L features a redesigned exterior with new front, rear, and side design updates. The 500X gets FCA\u2019s award-winning Uconnect 4 infotainment system standard \u2013 including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity.
