Ryan Gosling\u2019s fat cat producers<\/a>\u00a0this week. But then Matthew Modine had to go and play spoiler.<\/p>\nModine was in state to talk up his new film, \u201cFamily Weekend,\u201d shot here in 2011 under Jen \u201cDefender of the 99 Percent\u201d Granholm\u2019s generous film handouts to One Percenters. Modine questioned the economic return for the state citing the games Tinseltown played to con more cash from state taxpayers.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we came there and actually ripped off the tax subsidy program. I\u2019m sorry to say that,\u201d Modine said, suggesting the film\u2019s producers stretched the definition of putting Michiganians to work in order to qualify for as big tax incentive as possible \u2013 noting that his driver was tasked with painting walls, for example.<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt like our producers were kind of gaming the system,\u201d Modine said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not supposed to work that way. You\u2019re supposed to come and leave money in the state, not rob the state of its resources.\u201d<\/p>\n

While celebrity-addled journalists looked the other way, the state\u2019s film subsidy generously doled out millions to millionaires from George Clooney to Michael Moore to shoot their films here. Meanwhile, the state\u2019s credit rating cratered to AA- as Lansing neglected long-term liabilities for short-term ribbon cuttings with the stars \u2013 until Nerd Snyder slowed the gravy train.<\/p>\n
