Mike Duggan\u00a0has volunteered<\/a>\u00a0to save Detroit\u2019s listing ship.<\/p>\n

We figured that was going to happen\u00a0as early as a year ago<\/a>\u00a0when the\u00a0ex-DMC CEO bought a house in Detroit\u2019s upscale Palmer Woods neighborhood. So the mayoral candidate has seen Detroit from the ground floor. Making the media rounds this week, Duggan visited The Detroit News editorial board and we asked him what the biggest shock was when he moved into the city.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doubling of my car insurance,\u201d said Duggan without hesitation. He now pays $6000 a year on three cars \u2013 two Ford sedans\u00a0and a PT Cruiser \u2013 instead of $3000 when he lived nearby in the \u2018burbs. Call it the Detroit\u00a0insurance\u00a0tax.<\/p>\n

Actually, that\u2019s a bargain in one of the nation\u2019s auto theft capitals. Most Detroiters pay\u00a0nearly three times\u00a0<\/a>the\u00a0state average in auto insurance. \u201cMy wife will be happy to hear it could be worse,\u201d added Duggan.<\/p>\n

The would-be mayor also allowed that its\u2019 hard to find a movie theater in the city (the RenCen cineplex is all the 138 square mile city has to offer), a hardware store, or a restaurant outside of downtown. Welcome to Detroit \u2013 which is why the middle class has disappeared.<\/p>\n
