{"id":10098,"date":"2012-04-20T17:23:06","date_gmt":"2012-04-20T21:23:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/henrypayne.com\/?p=10098"},"modified":"2012-04-20T17:23:06","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T21:23:06","slug":"payne-granholm-was-for-stand-your-ground-before-she-was-against-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/henrypayne.com\/index.php\/2012\/04\/payne-granholm-was-for-stand-your-ground-before-she-was-against-it","title":{"rendered":"Payne: Granholm was for stand-your-ground before she was against it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From under a hoodie, ex-Governor Jennifer Granholm has been outspoken on the need for &#8220;justice&#8221; in the Trayvon Martin killing, including attacking the NRA for pushing Florida&#8217;s so-called &#8220;stand-your-ground&#8221; law that allegedly encourages folks like George Zimmerman to wield a gun when threatened.<\/p>\n<p>Left unmentioned in Granholm&#8217;s attack, however, is that she herself was an NRA-supported advocate for passing Michigan&#8217;s own stand-your-ground law in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tonight on &#8216;The War Room&#8217; we&#8217;ll examine . . . the National Rifle Association&#8217;s push for self-defense laws that have allowed Trayvon Martin&#8217;s killer to go unpunished,&#8221; previewed the March 29 website of her Current TV program, &#8220;The War Room.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In one of two segments on the stand-your-ground issue and gun rights run amok, Granholm guest, Joseph Marshall, an activist and radio host, exclaimed &#8220;that&#8217;s a bad law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of course,&#8221; replied Granholm.<\/p>\n<p>But in 2006, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nraila.org\/news-issues\/news-from-nra-ila\/2006\/nra-backed-castle-doctrine-bills-beco.aspx\">NRA applauded<\/a>\u00a0Granholm for passing a stand-your-ground law (also known as a &#8220;castle doctrine&#8221;) as governor of Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today Governor Jennifer Granholm signed into law a package of six self-defense bills backed by the National Rifle Association, bringing &#8216;Castle Doctrine&#8217; protections to law-abiding Michigan citizens,&#8221; read the NRA press release.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to thank the Michigan Legislature and Governor Jennifer Granholm for working together in making this victims&#8217; rights bill into law,&#8221; said Chris W. Cox, the NRA&#8217;s chief lobbyist. &#8220;When you&#8217;re confronted by a criminal, you don&#8217;t have the luxury of time. This Castle Doctrine package states that if victims choose to stand their ground and fight, their decision will not be second-guessed by the State of Michigan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Granholm&#8217;s Michigan joined Florida, Texas, Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky, and others states, reports Awr Hawkins at Big Government.com, &#8220;where governors and state legislators have tried to restore the people&#8217;s right to use a gun to defend their own lives and the lives of their families. . . .
